organization within the school for
the purpose of looking after achool

The children have various ones
of their number act as notice. The
' duty of the police is to prevent

with considerable success. The

are given twice a week orally.

Church was given a gift of $1200 by
two local people who do not wish
to make themselves known. With
this money carpets are to be pur
chased for the auditorium and the
league rooms. Heavy felt will be laid
underneath the carpet Several
days ago this gift was put before
the board, who unanimously accept
ed U.
New steps leading from the street
to the church auditorium doors will
also be built Immediately one side
only as the other side was built new
last year.

Davis, younger son of Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Davis, was given a party
Saturday evening, the occasion be
ing his eleventh birthday. First
there was a theater party, after
which all sojourned to an ice cream
parlor where refreshments were
served.

Janet Ballantyne, Marjorle Hubbs
and Harold and Bumpy Davis.

hospital by the attending physician,
where an operation was to be per
formed as soon as her condition

Mr. Hughes, an aged resident of
tills locality who has been in poor
health for some time, Is now con
fined to his bed and his condition
is critical.
Mrs. Louise Madden from. Port
land, was a visitor at the home of
her parents. Mr. and Mrs. R Rein

not fully recovered from her re

been confined to his bed or the
past five weeks with a severe attack
of pleurisy, following intestinal flu.
Although Improving slowly It will be
several weeks before Welsenberg
will be able to leave his bed. He Is
under the care of Dr. Gerald Smith.

Sllverton At the meeting of the
Sllverton Rifle club Friday eventng
in the basement of the armory the
following officers were elected:
President, M. L. Inghram; secre
tary, Ed Kottek, Junior.
There are now more than 30 mem
bers, 5 of them being women. Ten
of these members win be picked to
qualify for the National Rifle asso
ciation which is sponsored by the
United States government and
which furnishes ammunition, guns
and targets to this association.
The next shoot will be held Fri
day evening, November 1, when
three prizes will be given for 'men
and two for ladies on that evening
for high scores.
Some of the best scores on last
Friday evening are as follows:

The Ira DeWitt home was the
scene of a party Friday evening
when friends gathered in to wish
them well in their new home in
Corvallis. DeWitt will be a partner
in a garage In Corvallis. Six tables
of "500" were in play until a late
hour. Refreshments were served and
the party went to the J. B. Durffee
home where they gave Mr. Durffee

while returning with his wife and
small daughter from a theater in
Portland. The car hit between a
large truck and its trailer, driven
by Harold Russell of Sheridan.
Russell applied the brakes on the
rear wheels of the truck in pre
paration to make a left hand turn
at the Intersection, while Stock
well reached the Intersection from
the opnoslt direction lust at the
time when the four-wheel trailer
slid around directly accross his path.
Tne damage to his car was esti
mated around $250 00. though both
vehicles are covered are covered
by insurance.

RUSHED TO HOSPITAL
Donald Alvln Wallace, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Sam Wallace, living two
miles south of here, was taken sud
denly 111 In school. A. E. Feller took
the boy and his mother to the Wil
lamette sanitarium In Salem. He
was found to be suffering from ap
pendicitis, and an operation re
vealed the appendix had bursted.
Alvln Is doing as well as can be ex
pected.
VENUS CHAPTER MEETS

Gervals A public reception was
held at the school house Friday
night in honor of the staff of teach,
art both in the high school and pub.

Teachers in Gervals union high
school are Prof. Brehaute, Prof.
Stewart. Mrs. Helen EstudUla, who

years while Miss Herman and Mrs.
Vernon are the new teachers. Mr.
Dave Moses and Miss Martin are
also new teachers in the grade
school.
A program was given consisting
of a piano solo, Florence Durette;
vocal solo. Ruth Palmer; reading,
Carl Francis; Instrumental duet.
Misses Hayes and Weiss; reading,
Catherine Mutter, and ft vocal solo
by Monica Schwab.
Prof. Brehaute acted as chairman
and during his talk stressed the
need of a larger building to care for
the large enrollment of students
which Gervals union high school
has this year, as lack ot space Is
hindering the teachers from giving
the number of studies asked by the
students for the reason each teach
er must double on classes for lack
of space teaching one large class.
Refreshments were served late in
the evening by members from the
missionary and St. Rita altar so
cieties.

ed and remodeled Inside and out by
the owners. New shelves and coun
ters have been Installed and Mr.
Gerber intends to make it a first-
class highway store with city prices

an interest of W. T. Huston In the
Clough-Huston undertaking estab
lishment in Salem last neck In con
junction with two other men, Glen
S. Macy, McMlnnvllle, and Dale
Taylor of Salem. Taylor, who has
been with Rlgdon's mortuary for
the past nine years, will be mana
ger of the new concern.
Mr. Henkle also has part owner
ship with F. A. Thomas In the
Sheridan undertaking parlors.

tored to Columbia City Sunday,
where they will visit their son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Loy
al Johnson and small son. Mr.
Johnson will return home the first
of the week while Mrs. Johnson will
remain for a week.
