Eggs are causing no little con cern among some of the mer chants this week, but the food buy er not so much, for he is, to a large extent, ignoring them. Retail egg aalcs here during the past few weeks, dealers estimate, have fal len to about 33 percent of normal, and Salem, normally a heavy pro ducer for home consumption, has been forced to ship In from Port land considerable- quantities - for consumption here. One store alone estimates that local . eggs available throughout the city porb ably total only about half the quan tity sold by this firm during a normal period. Importation of outside products, at higher prices, therefore, has re sulted in somewhat of Indifference on the part of the consumer. First quality eggs are selling generally at 45 cents per dozen, ana cutter, too. Is higher, selling at from 58 to 60 cents a pound. Among-'the late berries, huckle. berries are a little higher, retailing at around 20 cents a pound, cran berries are steady at 30 cents, Ev. erbearing strawberries are 15 cents a box, while fresh raspberries are 20 cents a box. Some ,vegreen blackberries are still obtainable. In creased shipments of cranberries during the coming week, together with a possible decrease in price is forecast by some merchants. Elberta peaches and groundcher. ties are about a thing of the past, and soon watermelons and musk melons will soon be gone. A few cantaloupes have reappeared but the season will be brief. Bortlett pears are plentiful at varying prices depending upon quality, which is mostly good. Some stores are not stocking these ex tensively, but report that some of the canneries are selling "seconds' at around SO cents a bushel, the quality of which la said to be fair, ly good- for home canning. Bosk pears have appeared for table use. Tomatoes, many of which are being taken for home canning, are aelling at around (1.39 a bushel. Grapes'are very - plentiful Just now, with the mice and Jelly va rieties selling at from S to 8 cents a pound and the choicer table kinds somewhat higher. Fresh Gravensteln apples are about cleaned up and are being or soon will be replaced by the first shipments of Jonathans from Yakima. Red and green peppers will re. main plentiful until the frosts shut off the supply, while pickling cu- . cumbers are being sold generally at I'.i cents per pound. Green beans are still In the mar ket In fair supply, ranging In price from 8 pounds for 35 cents for somewhat stale product to 3 pounds tor 25 cents for fresher, tenderer stun. Local lettuce Is In plentiful sup ply, generally at 10 cents a head, but varying somewhat. Some frost damage was suffered In the Lake Labish section the past week, but not sufficiently to effect local supplies. Oreen corn Is still coming, with prices prevailing at last week's fig ures. Walla Walla dry onions have given way! to the Lake Labish yel low danvers, at about the same figures. But little change Is noted In the potato hiarket, with Yakimas sel ling at $2 and locals at $1.90. The Yakimas are a little more In pref erence, but will decline In favor as the local crop ripen The new orange crop Is coming In at prices ranging from 40 to 80 cents per dozen, .while lemons are a little easier at 40 cents, for qual ity stmt. New crop walnuts are quoted at 36 cents, while Brazil nuts are quoted at 30 cents per pound. Brazil has half-year licenses for automoblllsts. . - WOMEN END SURVEY KITCHEN UTILITIES Washington, (P) Colorado's urban homes are ranked higher than the average throughout the country with respect to the number equipped with kitcnen sinks and running water in a survey conducted by the General Federation of Women's clubs. In Colorado towns of 10,000 to 35,000 population, M in every 100 dwellings were found to nave tnis housekeeping accessory. It The state, however, was not rank ed so high In the number of homes having electricity. Only three-' fourths of the Colorado urban homes are electrically lighted while the national average in urban homes la four-fifths. A larger proportion of California farm homes use electricity for cook ing than do those in any other state. In New York state, 338 small towns were listed as lacking sewer systems. The proportion, of homes equipped wun sanitary iaciuues in towns having sewer and water systems was higher, however, than In cities of the same site elsewhere In the United States. - ROME EATS FEW FISH Rome Wt Italians probably con sume less fish than any other peo ple in Europe.
