POISON GAS FUMES TMOTHERHAMBURG (Continued from Pag, 1) children to other sections of the city Bnd the streets in the menaced district were closed. The emigra tion sheds of the Hamburg-American line were pressed Into service to shelter the homeless while the police requisitioned all available milk as a gas antidote. so serious was the menace that all the ambulances and- fire bri gades in Hamburg were mobilized for service, the fire brigades don ning gas masks and fighting oft the fumes with ammonia. Hamburg. Germany. Mav 31 (IP) With 11 persons reported dead and 100 seriously affected, a huge cloud of deadly phosgene gas that threat ened the Hamburg area throughout the night, was blown, at least tem porarily, toward open country at noon today by a providential wind. Pour firemen and five policemen were reported among the dead. The deadly gas used in war was being conveyed through the city during the night when the tank confining it exploded. Like a thick gray fog. hanging as heavily and as solidly as If enclosed In an Invisible balloon of vast proportions, the gas spread out around the streets. The cloud settled over the sub. urb of Wilhelmsuurg and Its fumes spread among the 200,000 people llv ing there. Hundreds were gassed In the streets and at least 100 were taken to hospitals. Reichswehr soldiers, policemen and firemen fought the cloud with ammonia guns. They drove It across the Hofe canal where sev eral firemen were gassed. But for hours they could not get it away from thickly Inhabited areas. Throughout Hamburg there was panic. People rushed into the streets, afraid of meeting death In their homes. . During the forenoon rain started falling and a wind came up from tne east. Tne gas, moving solidly, drifted toward an uninhabited heath west of the city, and the danger was diminished. Complete mystery surrounds the explosion. The firm that was In charge of the shipment refused in. formation. It Is reported that the gas was old war material, destined partly for destruction and partly for shipment abroad, chiefly the United States. Professor Haber. dermanv's lead ing poison gas expert, said today tnac one-nau a gram of the deadly pnosgene within a space of one cu bic yard of air was sufficient to kill a human being In one minute. Professor Haber was mystified re. gardlng the origin of the gas. He said it was produced In war tlmo in great quantities, but now was man ufactured in Germany only in the smallest amounts for use in certain dyes. Rain, he said, would destroy the phosgene's power to harm. SUSPECTS SON OF SLAYING MOTHER (Continued from Page 1) my debts, such as rent of this old shack and money I have borrowed from various ones. "She once said if she ever died in LaGrande she would want Snodgrass and Zimmerman to have charge of the funeral. Mr. Snodgrass can be appointed administrator. But to re peat, there is not one lousy dollar against her car, estate or anything else she owns. Please do your best. Lot," The "Lot" he referred to is Mr, Snodgrass. No motive is known for the crime although officers today were recall ing that Smith had been seen with Robert Clark, who was found mur dered west of La Grande during the winter, a short time before the sup posed time of the crime, Smith dis cussed the murder of Clark at con siderable length with a newspaper man alter the body wns round but no suspicions were held, either by officers or others. SCHOOL PICNIC . NEARLY FATAL (Continued from Page 1) sent the girls on home with Wain in the Kafoury car. The accident oc-j curred between Grande Hondo and Wlllamtna when the driver became blinded with glaring headlights. The three boys with the Smith car did not return to Salem until seven this morning. Nearly 100 high school boys and girls drove over to Neskowin yester day for the annual picnic. They were accompanied by two teachers, Miss Ada Ross and Miss Leila John son. Because of the dissatisfaction with the number and kind of picnics that have been given by high school stu dents this spring, and particularly because he objected to Sunday pic nics and the -election of alUw so far away from Salem, Superlntend nt George U. Hug passed ft ruling Friday morning that no more lic nics can be scheduled without the permission of the dean of girls, Miss Mabel Robertson. CANCER TREATMENT REPORTED SUCCESS Paris, (IP Treatment of cancer by electro-magnetism has proved success in several cases, according to a report to the . -jademy of Sci ences by Dr. Georges Lakhowsky, of the Salpetrtere hospital. Dr. Lakhowsky tried It first on plants which he inoculated with vegetable cancer srems. One plant was isolated in an electro-magnetic field. The cancerous tumor ap peared but the action of the elec tric rays soon killed It and the plant prospered while all the others per ished. Dr. Lakhowsky and Profes- icr Oosset are continuing their ex periments with animals.
