PAGE SIX THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON .WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1926 DEDICATE FINE ARTS BUILDING University of Oregon, Eupene. Oct. 21. (Special) At the dedi cation of the Fine, Arts building to day as part of the Semi-Centennial celebration , Dr. E. T. Willnma, professor of Oriental language and literature at the University of California and one of the leading American authorities on the Ori ent, declared that the proximity of the University of the Far East made It particularly fitting that a museum nf Oriental art be estab lished in Eugene. 'This building," said Dr. Wil liams, "will not only serve as n fitting memorial to President P, I. Campbell, who was so interest ed In art, but will also provide a suitable home for the Murray Warner collection. "It Is not pt range that a muse um of Orlentn! art should be es tablished In this for Occident, but a very appropriate thing. We should learn to appreciate the art of the Orient in order to gain nn understanding of these far-removed people: this understanding can not but cause prejudice to vanish," he declared. The art of the Orient Is worthy of study, saJd Dr. Williams. "Civ ilization wns born In Asia, and fronvAsia wo derive our faith, the beginnings of science and our phil osophy. In a university we seeli the wisdom of all the lands and ages, and the Orient should not be neglected. May Oregon conr tlnue to gather here the rare treasures of the Far East to be an inspiration to her sons." "Each race hao its own Inheri tance nf Ideals and traditions. These find representation in art. and for that roason the art of every country Is characteristically different. We do not want th Chinese or Japanese to adopt our Ideas of art, neither do wo want to adopt their ways, for wo have our own nntlonal Idenls to main tain. But to appreciate and un derstand the art of the Orient, is to Increase the lnter-racial friend ship and pence."
