The Immigration la 1849 was larger than in any former year and he country now comprising tno counties of Marlon, Llnu, Polk and Benton was rapidly filling up and the prospects for the speedy growth of the embryo town just surveyed out at Salem wore sup posed to be encouraging. The immigration, as in 1K45, came into the Willamette valley by two routes, the larger portion thereof coming by the old route down Snake river and the Colum bia, but a large minority arrived very late, and after much priva tion and suffering, having come In by the newly discovered southern route via Humboldt river and Klamath lake, crossing the Siski you mountains beyond Canyonvllle whoro many of them lost their teams, and were reduced to tho very verge of starvation. WOOD WORKING JACOU WEI2EL Cabinet Works upholstering and refinlshlng A'hone 1691, 331 Court St ' Honorable Jesse Appkguto, who met the immigration near Fort Hall aud Induced a portion to fol low the nowly discovered route. The disasters that overtook them in the canyoa would not have be fallen them had they been a week earlier in reaching end passing that terrible place. A small party. the foremost, came through wi'd but little danger or suffering, but , when the bulk of the party came up, the rains had so swelled the streams that nearly all lost their teams, wagons and provisions auil barely escaping, came out into the umpqua valley destitute and for lorn and but for assistance fur nished by (he citizens ot the Wil lamette, many must have perish ed. After Borne months of sovero privation, finally all reached the fans of plonty by the close of the year. Among those who came lu this year by the new route, were Judge J. Qtilnn Thorton, formerly of Albany, and Virgil K, Prlngle end Jnmoa Campbell, residing la Marion county, in the vicinity of Salem. A few lots ot the newly surveyed . - town of Salem, were sold at auc tion, payment to be made therefor in wheat the year after the saio, but none of the lots so sold were improved or built upon for some yours aftetward. Duriug the summer ot 1847, an arrangement was made between the trustees of the Oregon Insti tute and Dr. William H. WUIhou, to the following effect: Mr. Will- - son disposing of his land claim previously held In order to make and to perform the conditions of said agrement. The claim wnlch Willson held was that part ot the present farm ot Rev. J. L. Parrish which lies east of the public rotid running in front of sad Parrish residence. The contract between Willson ad tho suld trustees was in eubstunre as follows: Wilteon gave to suld board of trustees his .. bond for $100,000, conditioned that he would take charge of the section of and claimed by said in stitute sluce known in the U. S. government survey as the claim ot William H. Willson, and wife, and mat he would use all necessary means to secure a title by dona tion from the United States, and . as the agent ot said trustees, he would sell the lots and would pay over to said trustees two-thirds Jt the proceeds of all sales ot lota . or lands' upon ho claim, and ou final settlement that he would dl vido with aid trustees all uueoid land or lots, rotalning hmsulf one third and conveying as good a tltlo as he shot Id receive from the United States to the said trustees, ot two-thirds of all lots or land so divided with the said trustees. This contract was signed by Dr. Will, son but not by his wife end after tlie congress of the United States had passed the donation act giving to the claimant's wife ono-halt ot his claim In her own right, Mrs. Willson refused on her part to con vey to tho trustoos ot the institute but a small portion ot the bwo : thirds of her individual portion ot bnld clnlm.
