A resolution calling for an inves tigation of alleged manipulation of crude rubber prices by British colonial governments was given preferred status today on the- leg islative program of the house. The resolution was introduced yesterday by Representative Til son of Connecticut, the republican floor leader. The action In giv ing It priority was talten by the rule committee. It would direct the house commerce committee to conduct an investigation "of the means and methods of control of production and exportation of crude rubber, coffee, sisal, quick silver, potash, nitrates and otlcr such raw materials," and tlw ef fect this control has upon United States commerce both as to sup ply and price. The essay reads as follows: "Oregon must eventually become the drug garden of tho world," was a statement made by Professor Gil flllan, assistant professor of phar macy at tho Oregon Agrcultural college, over a year ago; and every day we are nearlng that point which will mean millions to our community. Wo have. In Oregon, the wonderful combination of soil and climatic conditions which pro duce the best results In drug cul tivation. There are some herbs, of course, that cannot bo grown here, but as great many drug plants are a native of this region, while oth ers may be successfully introduced. Even the despised poison oak Is used In a compound as an antitoxin against poison oak. This district is tho native homo of cascarn, but as a forest production, It will event ually run out. There Is no suitable .substitute, and the world must have- It. Here, where It has grown wild, is tho locality where It will flourish under cultlvntlon. Oregon grapo root, likewise Is a native of Oregon. For years cascara and Oregon grnpo liavo been ahlpped out In carload lots. Tho mint grown In tho Salem district has the purest oil nnd the highest content of menthol of any produced In tho United States. With the steady Increase of our peppermint acreage. It will jiot be long beforo we shall harvest a mil lion dollar crop annually. Oregon's crude drugs helped win the World War for democracy.
