Importance of Drug
Culture as Valley
Industry Is Related
"Drug culture and manufacture
in tho Salem District," Is tho title
of tho Klwanls club essay written
by LUa Louise Cation. Her essay,
whlio not given the grand prize
of all entries due to the fact that
aho Is older thnn Phillip Mayer,
grand prlzo winner, was judged In
senior high school. The essay reads
as follows:
"Oregon must eventually become
the drug garden of tho world," was
a statement made by Professor Gil
flllan, assistant professor of phar
macy at tho Oregon Agrcultural
college, over a year ago; and every
day we are nearlng that point
which will mean millions to our
community. Wo have. In Oregon,
the wonderful combination of soil
and climatic conditions which pro
duce the best results In drug cul
tivation. There are some herbs, of
course, that cannot bo grown here,
but as great many drug plants are
a native of this region, while oth
ers may be successfully introduced.
Somo of tho most Important and
common drugplants that are found
arouqd Salem are enscara or
chlttem, Oregon grnpo, pepper
mint, foxglovo or digitalis, Btmg
num moss, flax, and hops. Even
the despised poison oak Is used In
a compound as an antitoxin
against poison oak. This district is
tho native homo of cascarn, but
as a forest production, It will event
ually run out. There Is no suitable
.substitute, and the world must
have- It. Here, where It has grown
wild, is tho locality where It will
flourish under cultlvntlon. Oregon
grapo root, likewise Is a native of
Oregon. For years cascara and
Oregon grnpo liavo been ahlpped
out In carload lots.
Tho mint grown In tho Salem
district has the purest oil nnd the
highest content of menthol of any
produced In tho United States.
With the steady Increase of our
peppermint acreage. It will jiot be
long beforo we shall harvest a mil
lion dollar crop annually.
Oregon's crude drugs helped win
the World War for democracy.
School children gathered vast qunn
titles of foxglove, from which
digitalis was made There was also
tho spagnum moss which la found
in our salt hogs. This, our people
shipped to France during tha war
for surglcnl dressings.
Professor A. Zlcflc. dean of the
School of Pharmacy of tho Oregon
Agrlculturo college, snys, "drugs
can be grown here at one tenth the

nosota. Tho great drug gardens of
the United States aro located In
these states. Large sums of money
are expended annually for crude
drugs Imported from foreign coun
tries where they are produced Un
der soli and climatic conditions
slmiliar. In many cases, to ours.
Therefore, on a business basis, the
crude drug industry In Oregon
would bring great wealth that Is
now going to waste in our woods
and wilderness places.
Tho fact that Daniel J. -Fry, the
largest crude drug buyer In the
state, Is located in this city, grants
Salem an advantage of claiming
to be the crude drug center of Ore
gon. Besides conducting a market
for diug plants in tho vicinity, Mr.
Kry'B territory already extends
along the whole of our coast, from
Clatsop county down Into northern
California. In order to rccelvo all
the benefits of the drug Industry,
we should have a peppermint oil
refinery In Salem.
Drug gardens in the vicinity of
Salem will not only bring wealth
and prosperity to tluelr owners,
but also to tho many wheso help
wilt bo necessary in their cultiva
tion and caro. Furthermore, after
refineries have been erected for
the drying and distilling, there will
bo labor for hundreds more. It Is
not at all Improbable that some
day factories may be established
