parts and they handle the chnr

makes them live human beings.

spontaneity and charm that makes
her work effective. It Is through

Miss Ethelma Edwards, as Mrs.
George B. Nettlelun, sustains a
difficult role with dignity and
grace. She has had considerable
previous dramatic experience. Her
emotional scenes In tho third act
afford much amusement and her
hysteria helps to pile up the
laughs at the climax of the play.
Ezra Webb, who pluys "Krome,"
Iho bookkeeper, has appeared in
"Safety First," and "Pinal'orc,"
and helps materially to lend an
atmosphere of reality to the first
act. Homer Richards, as "Tony
Toler," the salesman, gels his &tufl
Dvcr in real live wire fashion, as a
pill salesman should, while LeKoy
tirote, as Mr. Apple-gate, presidont
of a chain of drug stores, finds
bob ad dropped into a queer place
k hen he landed in the office of the

fighting partners Just what he
thinks of them.
Winfield Clark, as Thomas J.
Vanderholt, the lawyer who mixes
things up by trying to straighten
things out, gives the character a
tru and life-like impersonation. It

previous dramatic experience. Mr
Clark has appeared In Salem in

the Heilig on New Year's eve, it
Is announced by Archie Holt, man
nger. As luck will have it, the
last day of the old year falls on
Thursday, a special vaudeville
night, hence the Heilig will be all
set for the greatest evening ever
seen at this thater.
The big show will begin at 11
o'clock, and will last just ns long
as tho happy crowd desires to
stay, it Is announced. The vaude
ville artists have already all re
plied that they will be glad to
take part, and so every one le
now working on a brand new line
for the third performance for that
night.
Tn addition to the five big acts
of vaudeville, each ono of which
Is expected to be double length,
the Heilig has planned several
featurs. A surprise event will
take place just ut the stroke of
twelve.
Everyone will be provided with
noise making instruments, confet
ti, and ail will be allowed to
make as much noise as they wish.
The regular performance of the
vaudeville at seven and at nine
will be held, and the matinee will
start at 11 o'clock. Every seat
will be reserved for the big show.
The first two shows, will each be
augmented with holiday specials,
will be at regular prices, with no
seats reserved.

. HOOD RIVER COUNTY
Through the attorney general's
office a lease has been executed
between Hood Ittver county and
the Caldwell-Dunn am Investment
company whereby the county Is
to acquire a tract of land on the
outskirts of Hood River for an
experimental farm to be operated
by Oregon Agricultural college.
The legislature of 1925 ap
propriated $12,000 annually for
the maintenance of tho fnrin, but
no part ot this money can he used
for purchase ot grounds or build
ings The land is valued at ?25,
225, and the county did not have
money to pay for it without in
curring an indebtedness in ex
cess of the $5000 allowed by the
constitution. To get around this
difficulty the attorney general's
office made the arrangement for
a lease agreement, whereby the
county will appropriate a pay
ment efleh year for five years, and
at the end of that period the
county will acquire title.

The shipping board ret used today
to turn over to the war department
two of its president type boats for
transporte.
The board held that it had none
of that type of vessels in excess to
transfer to the war department
and that it had no funds which
could be applied to the building of
sucji vessels fur the department.
Tho departmental request and
reasons for it were the susject of a
resolution of inquiry introduced
today by Chairman Jo nee of the
senate commerce committee. No
action was taken at today's a
ston.
