D. ilensler, of the Oregon Agricultural college, secretary, and the chairmen of the various de partments, have prepared a pro gram of unusual Interest, says Mr. Carleton. The representative council! which transacts all of the associa tion business, will hold lte session Tuesday. December 21. On the following morning a general as sembly of tho teachers will be can ed in the Lincoln high school audi torium. The program will include singing under the direction oi w. H. Uoyer of the X'ortland schools, Invocation by Uev. Oswald Taylor, dramatisation of familiar songs by fouya from Eliot school under the -direction of Ml&a Mabel Huney, elase room teacher, and addresses by MIbs Mabel V. Wilson of Seat tle. Dr. Elliott Cubberley of Stan ford and Mrs. J. F. Hill of Port laud, vice-president of the Nation al Congress of Parents and 'resett ers. On Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning departmental meetings will bo held with various chairmen In charge. On Thursday afternoon, Decem ber 31, the general assembly will hear an address by Fred W. Stel- wer of Pendleton, candidate for the republican nomination for United States senator and repre senting the American Legion, and an addrcas by Dr. Cubberley. The report of the resolutions commit tee will be presented by G. B. Lamb, Tillamook county school superintendent. Music will be furnished by third grade pupils of Jlosford school under the direction . of Miss Grace McCrackon, class room teacher. S. L. Historic Adventure J. 0. Hunter, 86 year old pioneer residing at Ashland, was born, raised and brought up on the site of the present Kansas City, Mls sourl, knd as a boy he often sojw the frontiersmen and fur-traders whose names figure most In his tory. Hs remembers particularly Jim Brldger, Kit Carson and Pier re Choteau. Trading Post Kansas City, during Mr. Hunter's boyhood, was a mere trading post and landing place for the river boats. However,, the fur company maintained a warehouse there, and the traders and trappers and of ficials were frequent visitors at the place. In fact, Mr. Hunter's father was often In the employ of the company, and he boarded and kept the company's representatives at his house when they were at this place. "The fact Is," says Mr. Hunter, "I was named in honor of Joseph Clymer, president of the fur com pany." Brldger According to Mr. Hunter's rem iniscences, Jim Brldger was a tall bony, though wiry sort of a man, open countenance, square-cut fea tures, and face well bronsed from the long continued effect of sun and wind. He was the greatest of the mountain men, and unless it was Carson there was no guide In greater demand by soldiers, pio neers, traders and adventurers. Possibly Carson ranged over a somewhat greater area, take it on the whole, for Brldger seldom if over ventured Into the great Nort- west. But his knowledge In regard to the Big Horn country, Green1 River valley, Salt Lake basin, Yel lowstone, upper Missouri and the prairies as far as the Snake river district was intimate and reliable. Brldger's Career The faots of his life are fairly well known. He was a native of Washington, D, C, but as early as 1821, when be was nineteen years of age, he joined General Ashley's fur trading expedition bound for the Interior and Rocky mountains district. Ashley is generally named by historians as the discoverer of the South Pass through which emi gration eventually took Its way westward to Old Oregon. As for Brldger he was the finder of the Great Salt Lake. Many years after this when the trouble came on be tween the Mormons Jn Utah and the United States government, old Jim Brldger made himself felt by acting as guide to the federal troops. As a Farmer It Is not so generally known that Brldger In 1866-7 came out of the mountains and purchased a farm near the present Kansas City, then called West port Landing, But It seems that he could not give his whole heart to farming. Like Dan iel Boone, he wanted to be on the move and so went back to the vast stretches of oountry which he loved so well. When he was finally compelled by old age to quit the mountains and plains, he came back to his farm on the Missouri. There, In the year 1881, he died, being 74 years of age. Sir George Gore During a three year period In the fifties, Brldger served as guide for a traveler by the name of Sir George Gore.
