FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1925 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON SPECIAL TAXES With returns now In from 29 out of 34 road district whllch voted on special tax levies last Saturday, the 29 reporting show that they voted a total of $41,275.' 23 in special taxes. Three of the 2y voted against levying special t-ixes. Two of theao declined to raise taxes aggregating $1500 and the other, fit i led to make a return cis to the amount adversely voted on. Last year 42 districts voted a total of $GS.209.62. Eight less districts voted this year and there still aro five to be heard from. Two more districts will hold road meet lnijft on November 28, these being No. i(i on Howell Prairie and No, 2f near Turner. When the final result is in the special district tax es may not be far behind last year, regardless "of the fewer districts voting. It Is noticeable- that heavy spe cial taxes were voted In districts where population is very sparse and voters few, but where limber holdings are heavy, for Instance it. Mill City $2646.70 was bored, Kith only six votes being cant,' all In the affirltive. At Detroit (iHll was voted with only seven trote9 cant, all in the- aft'irmlttve, At Elkhorn $2481 was voted with only six votes being cast, all in the li'firmltlve. Other heavily tim bored districts took the same sort ot an action. The heavy expense Df the tax In these districts fall: on the timber companies which are absentee landlords. Durkin, auto thief and slayer, may be drowned In the Chicago river or he may have per petrated a suicide hoax with bl03d-stained and shot-torn cloth ing, and a farowell letter to his mother. The handwriting and clothing found on the Michigan boulevard bridge last night were Identified as his, by his sister. Coast guards dragged the river all night. Despite the assertion that the writer wa9 slowly dying of a bul let wound lu tho lung and was desperate because he had to hide In basements and filch food from ico boxes, the police doubted the expressed intention to end It all In the river. There was little doubt, though. but that the letter and clothing were genuine The, blue overcoat and a gray suit coat, bearing a Kansas City firm's label had shot gun tears through the left sleeve and dried blood on the llnlngB.
