"Picking up prospective street car patrons by courtesous automo bile drivers reduce the operating income of the street car company and that affects the necessary ratc of fare," the company's ad, headed "Unfair Competition,' asserted Salem public library reports 4402 more books checked out over tho deek in the ten months of 1925 than in the entire year of 1024. This is an increase of 6 per cent with an Increase of 700 more books in October alone. The library is open from nine to nine on every day except Sundays nnd holidays. I believe it to be the duty of a councilman to see that good and just ordinances are enacted and ptaced on the statute books. Then do my best to have them enforced to the letter and lot justice reign supreme. The next thinr; I believe would be to see that we havo good side walks and lights; good and safe bridges, first where most needed; well equipped fire fighting devi ces. Next a poiice forco that woulJ enforce the laws of the city fear lessly against the rich and poor ahko, I would endeavor to spend the city's money in a careful way and where most needed. One of the most important things to do Ib to employ the men and women of the city in preference to outside work ers and leave as much of tho mon ey in the hands ot tho residents o( the city as possible. I havo seen on our streets men employed that have come to town and live on farms, as far oui as ten mllox working on our streets in front of mens homes that havo tried time, and again to get tho work but havo been turned down. I believe that all roll and bus traffic should he enforced to the letter, but keep ing both sides in mind and justice at all time, and net consider big "you" or little "mo" in tho least. I would jsupport the measure to pay a councilman a just wago for tho timo ho serves the city, the same as any other person scrvert for pay. We must nil remember that n city Is only a big family.
