With the administration's tax re duction proposal as a darting point, the house ways and means committee today listened to ad vice ot various organizations of citizens on many disputed fea tures ot the tax legislation that Is to be presented at the next ses sion of congress. The National Association of Manufacturers, tho Retailers Na tional Council, the Texas Tax club, the New York Board of Trade and the Real Estate Board of New York, all wero allotted time to present their views at to day's committee session. Passing over tor the moment Secretary Mellon's suggestion for a reduction of Income taxes all along the line, the committeemen first heard representatives of the Texas tax clubs endorse the sec retary's proposal for repeal of the federal Inheritance or estate tax. Speaking for a delegation of 18, Lee Satterwhie of Amarlllo, speaker of the Texas house, said the state ot Texas lolt It should have sole Jurisdiction over Inher itance taxeB within its borders. Texas not only needs that source ot revenue, he said, but the pres- . ent federal inheritance tax lev ies Is proving almost confiscatory. UMPQUA JETTY TO BE EXTENDED BY U. S. Washington, Oct. 21. (A. P.) The engineering corps of the United Statea army has decided to extend the Jotty the mouth of the Umpqua river in Oregon so that the flow ot water in that stream will scour away the sand bar Im peding navigation at that point. An allotment of $04,000 for this project was authorized today from existing river and harbor improve ment funds.
