He was one of 36,760 school children who helped to answer the old question of parent and teacher, "What ehall the children read?" About 800 teachere in 35 cities collected the ballots cast by the youngeicrs and made their recommendations which resulted in "The Winnetka graded book list" of 700 books, selected under the direction of C. E. Washburne, superintendent of schools of Wcnnetka, 111., Hable Vogel, assistant research libra rian, explained before the Illi nois library association today. A 14 year old boy of Quiucy, Mass., after reading "Evange line," remarked that "It doesn't seem possible a girl would walk eo many miles for her beau when now a girl wouldn't wilk one mile to see him." The county and the city jails today have three new occupants In the persons of George Green, Orln Smith and B. Harris, who were arrested In an automobile on the Pacific highway late yes terday by State Traffic Officer Pete Relnhart. The license plates on their car are said to have been Stolen from a car belonging to the Blake, McFall company of Port land. It Is believed that the three men were about to stop In Salem and attempt a series of burglar ies for the reason that they were equipped with a hammer, "Jim my," loaded revolver and other I things used by burglars. The Sa- lem police are Investigating In cooperation with Portland offi cers. Two of the men were placed in separate cells In the city jail and one was lodged In the county Jail eo they would not have opportu nity to confer with each other. Morrow and Umatilla counties Lena Vinson section of the Ore- gon-Washlngtoc highway, 15.1 miles of grading to be contracted tn two units, the west unit of 11. i miles and cast unit of four miles.
