Stantz was able to re ceive broadcast messages and re mained up niglil mid day uL this duty. Ono of tho messages he picked up told of the Shenandoah disaster. Another told of tho con ference of 21 commanders aboard tho U. S. S, Laugley at which the word who aired that hope was giv en up finding Captain Uodgers and his inpn olivp. Reduced to radio terms, Stantz endeavored to construct a trans mitter by using a apurk coil in place of a generator. This effort -was partially successful. One of tho searching vessels heard the faint call of the I'N-9, but couldn't recognize the signal long enough to got the position of the disabled seaplane. "We managed to keep bur hopes by believing that Stantz would get his sending set in order," said Aviation Pilot Pope. "We can't give him too much cerdit for the way In which he worked night and day on that pet of his." "Yes chimed in Stantz. "Be lieve me, that is some set. While we were In the air we were In constant communication. We used an A. C. tube transmitter and it certainly proved Us value to the navy." The seaplane was equipped wi'h a drooping antennae which went out of service when the plane was forced down. Stantz quickly con structed an aerial over the wings of the plane which permitted tho reception of all messages but with out a generator he was unable to broadcast. The baseball season In Salem is about over but the fans may have an opportunity to see a couple of the best teams In the state here after the fall tournament vhich Is now being played in Portland. Cycols and tho Port of Portland havo both met defeat at the hands of the locals. These two teams were the champions of their re spective leagues and therefore It is thought that Salem has met and defeated the best of them.
