The Southern Pacific welders have ar rived at Brooks on their way south. Their job is to build up the rounded ends of the rails where they join. Tlie continual pounding of the wheels tends to flatten these ends causing a low spot which rapidly deepens with the increasing hnock as the whorls pass. In the earlier days ot railroad little thought was given to this, or the bllckety-clack of the wheels, as it seemed a part of any rail ride. Then the rails were placed so that the joints were opposite which accentuated the rhythemic pounding, but now the Joint is broken halt on the opposite rail which aids in smoothing out the vibration. SILVEKTON Sllverton, Aug. 29 (Special) Odd Fellows who have been mem bers of the order for 25 years will be honored at a special meeting Saturday night August 20th by Sil ver Lodge No. 21, I. o. O. F. The wives nnd daughters of the mem bers will hold a social meeting in the club room while the lodge Is In session. A banquet will be serv ed to all at the close of the .eve ning. The annual Labor Day celebra tion will be carried out again this year with tho plans much more elab orate than in former years. A complete program for both after noon and evening Is ;eing arrang ed. A special feature will be the Royal Rosarlan quartet selections. He is installing the attrition mill and will be ready for business by Oc tober 1. A. H. Barke was called to Brant, Alberta, by a message Informing hfm that his brother, Carl, had been burned to death. Mr. Barke left Friday mormlng. How the acci dent occurred was not stated in the message. Carl wae operating a garage at Alberta.
