MONDAY, AUGUST Old Jupiter riuvius who sent showci'B down in torrents during buturduy and Sunday, the flm ones fur 72 days, baited several of the various shorts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The Salem Senators, who were to cross bat with the fast Albany nine, had to cancel the game due to the rain. The game could have been play ed but it was necessary for "Fris co" Edwards to inform the Albany team by 11 o'clock and at that time the rain was coining down io buckotti full with no sign of abate ment. Edwards lias not as yet de cided what he will do for a game next Sunday hut promises the fans a good tough battle. Ilain also halted the motorcycle races nt Independence. The race officials promised to carry on the races providing there was no more rain after 9 o'clock but the rain continued to fall and it wnb necessary to call them off. The races will be held next Sunday. The team play scheduled at the Illnhee Country club for yester day was also postponed. It is not known whether the match will he played as the locals arc to plav the Albany team In a return match at Albany next Sunday. The locals won the first match. Tom Woods ana Hildebrnnd were captains of the two team?. CIRCUS PARADE IS Owing to the Increased size ol the HinKliiiB Brothers and Bar nuin & lialle, circus the time honored parade was abandoned during the season of 1921 and. for the same reason, the Btreot pageaut was omitted last season and again this year. There seem? to be little chance of ever restor ing It again as the big show ol 1925 is even larger and heavier than those of past seasons. As even the layman knows, the circus man's first business Is to get the show pnraphcrnalin anil vast properties from the railroad yards to the show grounus ami then put them and the great tent; In place. But, following the coin bine, there was so much of thi: work to he done that the parade often started late and frequently had to he cancelled altogether. Last winter came the opporlun Hv to secure an unusual number of new foreign acts and purchase still another of Europe s biggest trained horse shows. The Itins- llng Brothers did not hesltat?. They linediately decided to "take on" these great, new features, pin.-; two herds of elephants, and make mom for them by continuing to eliminate the properties and ve nicies required for the 6treet pa rade and the time taken In giv ing the narade. "Our patrons are familiar with the trained animal innovations, said one of the show's agents yes terdny, "but I promise you they will bo wholly unprepared for the wonderful trained horse show that has now been autted. More than 150 educated equlnes were trans norteil from Enrune by special boat last winter, accompanied by the experts who teught them. No such hordes were ever before seen In America. The trained animal numbers have been varied by new displays. There arc now five herds of elephants in the arenas and on the stages in place of the customary three groupB. "Rome Idea of the equine dis plays may be had when It Is staled that one hundred nnd fifty horses, each ridden by an expert, are pre sented in n mammoth equine bal let. Another section of the 1925 program exhibits five companies of performing horses three troupes In the regular rings and two troupes In movable rings Bet upon the wooden stages. The lat ter Is an Innovation never before attempted. "The added horse show. Is not exhibited as n separate attraction, but is presented on the regular circus program In the main tent. In order that there might be room for all the rings and stages here tofore used In presenting men and women performers only It became necessary to Increase the size of the canvas pavlllion. This every where added to the weight of the elrcus equipment until, already unwleldly. OREGOKj THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON Conscience Needs Control to Be Safe Guide, Says Taylor The queetlon, "Ie the con science a safe guide?" was raleed Sunday morning by Rev. Fred C. Taylor, paetor of the Firet Meth odist church, at bis regular Sun day morning service. "Conscience," he said, "Is de fined as that power or faculty within us which enables us to distinguish botween right and wrong in conduct and character. It is the voice of God in the hu man soul; the epark of the celes tial in the human breast; the monitor and sentinel in our Uvea that warns, restutfns, directs nnd guides in thn right way. There are only two brings who have no need of conscience, God, because of His excellence, and the devil because he would not know what to do with it if he had it. "Is conscience a safe guide a all Limes?" he asked. "The con stitution of Oregon according to the Blue Book published by the PETRIFIED OAK FOREST FOUND NEAR SPOKANE Spokane, Wash. Discovery of a petrified forest of giant oak trees believed to be the only one of its kind on tho North American continent, has been made near the confluence of the Spokane and Co lumbla rivets in tsis state. E. M Tardy, United States school in spector for the Indian department ouw located on the Colvllle Indian reservation, announced the find which was made by Dr, W. A Johnston. Owing to its difficulty of access the forest baa not yet been fully explored, but is known to extend for half a mile along the south bank of the Columbia. The tre?s are two to five feet in diameter and some 60 feet tall. "The forest, of what apparently was a growth similar to our oaks. grew on one of the first of tho eight flows of basalt that partial ly covered that part of the state of Washington, Mr. Tardy said "The trees then were covered by subsequent flows.' Germans have developed a sys tem with which air planes pick up mail pouches from the ground while in flight. NOW Handker Speclally 290 secretary of state Brants the rlrrht to worship according to the dic tates of the conscience. This ie In haarmony with the federal con etitution. It is nroner and rlht and explains why we have Mo hammedan mosquee, Buddist temples. Joss houses and all kinds of religion in America. Peoplo follow their consciences. Rut does that always indicate that they are rigiit? "During tho world war we had conscientious objectors and con scientious cowards and conscience less profiteers in America. Some had conscience and some had none. When slavery existed, George Whitfield owned slaves and defended his position on the grounds of conscience and the Bible, while John Wesley con demned slavery as thn sum of all villianies and urged its abolish ment. Criminals have a coneci ence that lashes and condemns them, though not always reveal ed and followed. A conscience to be a safe guide must be en light cned and educated and kept ir harmony with tho Bible and the teachings of Christ. Then it be comes a power In the life and gives us efficacy in prayer, joy in Christian fellowship and efficieu cy In Christian work. With a con science void of offense we can go forward and endure and suffer and work to the end."
