KELLY SAID TO "We've flone a terrible thlnff we've killed a man." These words are said to have been muttered over and over by Ellsworth Kelly, one of the escap ed convicts from the Oregon penitentiary as he and his two com panions, Tom Murray and James Willoa fled through the state hos pital grounds Wednesday evening after having slain John Sweeney and J. M. Holman, guards at the state prison, and after losing their fourth member "Oregon" Jones. Kelly was said to be In a highly nervous condition. He was the last to leave the prison yard, and is believed to have run down the stairs from guard post No. 1, while the other two men leaped to the ground. Prison men believe Willoa would cringe If he got into a gun fight In the open, but Murray, It Is be lieved, would fight to the death. Zina Zlnn, the taxi cab driver whom the three men compelled to drive them Into the country, saya that Murray was boastful. One remark said to have been made by the convict wns: "I sure got one of them. I shot him right between the eyes." Some way the report has got out that the four escapes had agreed mutually to kill any of their num ber who might be seriously wound ed. Just how the report got out is not known. A knife cut In the right shoe ot Holman, one of the dead guards. and a corresponding cut In the foot caused considerable specula tion until a search of the pockets of Oregon Jones was made. On his body waa found a born-handled knife, with double-edged blade, and blood along one of the edgee. The knife was open la his pocket. The message was signed by R. R. Graves of Salem, whose name can not be found in the city directory, Jones' bod? was in charge of his brother, Dee Jones of Portland. Tomorrow the members of the Illahee Country club golf team w'll meet the Albany nlayere on the local course. The visitors are bringing a strong delegation and are expecting tu walk away with the bacon. Members of the local club have been working hard to get into shape for tho meet and they will give the Albany players a tough run for honors. The course has been put into tip-top shape, ac cording to Graham Sharkey, pro fessfonal of the club. The .locals have had some trou ble thie year in their meets so far but have Improved considerably the last few weeks.
