Convention Copies of the Portland, Maine, Telegram of July 12 faave been received in this city with an eight page supplement devoted to the then beginning national con vention of the Business and Pro fessional Women's ciuba. Smith of Salem, with an article concerning Mise Smith and her rise to the position of one of the assistants to the attorney general of Ore gon. But whoever was responsible for It had a most brilliant idea, for: tho organization as soon as launched spread with lightning rapidity until it has encompassed tho continent. No organization in Portland plays a more important part in the business and social life of the city than does the locai BPW club. Portland is highly honored in having the opportuni ty to entertain the national con vention of these able, energetic and far seeing business women nf the country. They are coming, we are told, from Oregon, Washing ton, California, Texas, Florida, the great middle west, from near ly every state, 2000 strong." Fur ther Items state that in six years the organization has become a power in forty seven states, in the Hawaiian Islands, Canada, and now Buenos Aires seeks ad mission. When Adella Prichard of Port land, Oregon, the national presi dent, struck her gavel calling to erder this seventh convention of the Business and Professionji Women's clubs, the attention of 60,600 business and professional women of the country was focus ed on Portland, Maine, and the ; business that will be transacted fey their representatives in that convention. The Salem Business and Pro fessional Women's club has ap proximately 160 members, and Is fortunate In having three repre sentatives at this inspiring con vention. Dr. Mary Purvine, Mrs. D. It. Ross, retiring president and secretary, respectively, and Miss ) Grace Smith. T j members of the local club expects to reap tho re ward of the enthusiasm these rep resentatlve women will bring back to Salem after having had a part in the sessions so carefully outlined by the executive heade of this national federation, Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Toothacre are spending the month at Casca dia. The members of the Needle eraft club were delightfully enter tained yesterday afternoon by Mrs. J. W. LaBare In her home on Lea street. Her guests were: Mrs. U Bechtei, Mrs. P. O. Stearns Mrs. David Cade, Mrs. Lela Ger man, Mrs. h, C. Brother-ton, Mrs. A. J. Basey, Mrs. George Martin, Mrs. Cadwelt, Mrs. Uuth Dennl son and Ms. E, E. Gillen. Miss Shane of Los Angeles was a spe cial guest at the affair. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Huckestein a-e vacationing for the next two weeks at Rockaway. m m m Mrr. B. J. Miles returned this afternoon from Portland after o week's visit spent with her daugh ter, Mrs. Will Knight. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Eckerlin, Sr., returned home yesterday af ter being in Portland for a short time as the guests of their son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Nadnn. While away they made the Mt. Hood loop trfp. Mrs. M. C. Woodard of Silver ton entertained last Friday af ternoon with a bridge party hon oring Mrs. S. W. Shelley Saur man and Mrs. Henry Meyers, Miss Amy Martin and Miss Jes sie Martin have returned to Sa lem after spending a delightful three weeks' vacation at the Bandon beaches. The ladies of the Presbyterian church will entertain tomorrow afternoon In Marion Square at 2:30 o clock with a missionary tea honoring Mrs. Frank MUU ean, a returned missionary from Ningpo, China. During the after noon Mrs. Milifcan will relate some of her experiences in the foreign land. The Dallas and Zena missionary societies are the invited guests for the occasion. Levy and Mite Eliza beth Levy left yesterday for Sea side where they will vacation for several weeks. Harry Levy motor ed his mother and sister to the seashore.
