Copies of the Portland, Maine,
Telegram of July 12 faave been
received in this city with an
eight page supplement devoted to
the then beginning national con
vention of the Business and Pro
fessional Women's ciuba. Pictures
of a few of the Oregon represent
atives Appear, anions them being
that of Miss Grace E. Smith of
Salem, with an article concerning
Mise Smith and her rise to the
position of one of the assistants
to the attorney general of Ore
gon. The leading editorial of the Is
sue was also devoted to the or
ganization, aaylng in part: "The'
Biwlocfis and Professional W j

figured in the public prints with
in recent years for the orgaiiiza-:

It had a most brilliant idea, for:
tho organization as soon as
launched spread with lightning
rapidity until it has encompassed
tho continent. No organization in
Portland plays a more important
part in the business and social
life of the city than does the locai
BPW club. Portland is highly
honored in having the opportuni
ty to entertain the national con
vention of these able, energetic
and far seeing business women nf
the country. They are coming, we
are told, from Oregon, Washing
ton, California, Texas, Florida,
the great middle west, from near
ly every state, 2000 strong." Fur
ther Items state that in six years
the organization has become a
power in forty seven states, in
the Hawaiian Islands, Canada,
and now Buenos Aires seeks ad
mission. When Adella Prichard of Port
land, Oregon, the national presi
dent, struck her gavel calling to
erder this seventh convention of
the Business and Professionji
Women's clubs, the attention of
60,600 business and professional
women of the country was focus
ed on Portland, Maine, and the
; business that will be transacted
fey their representatives in that
convention.
The Salem Business and Pro
fessional Women's club has ap
proximately 160 members, and Is
fortunate In having three repre
sentatives at this inspiring con
vention. Dr. Mary Purvine, Mrs.
D. It. Ross, retiring president and
secretary, respectively, and Miss
) Grace Smith. T j members of the
local club expects to reap tho re
ward of the enthusiasm these rep
resentatlve women will bring
back to Salem after having had a
part in the sessions so carefully
