Craln) Jiiiiti Cum cumi'a iu ou 1 tin nexi Tuesday evening, bringing to the theatregoers here that greatest of love dramas, "Romeo and Jul let." Miss Cowl plays Juliet; Rollo Peters , an exceptionally talented young artist, Romeo, and their performance at the Grand theatre will be their only appearance in Oregon. Besides she has won for herself the reputation of one of the great est Shakespearian .interpreters on the stage today.Jane Cowl has done something else equally commend able. She has modernized Shak espeare, putting into it an appeal that will go far towards returning he works of that premier drama tist to popular favor. Writing in the San Francinco Chronk-le during the recent appear ance of the company there George C. Warren says: ' Have we grown so accustomed the Jazzing of every thing that Inne Cowl's quick -paced produc tion of 'Romeo nnd Juliet' seemed normal lost night or has Miss Cowl tempered the speed of the tragedy more nearly to tradition? The play moved as swiftly ns on its first presentation here by this su premely fine actross. Mpa Cowl's Juliet has filled out the spots where It lacked com plete conviction, the parting scene, the subsequent sceno with Capulet and her mother, the wholo of the scene with the Friar and the po- Liim act: ne. "The balcony scene remains what it was, a love poem express ed in terms as perfect as one may ever hope to hear It read, and from that point the characterization de velops fullest beauty In the potion scene, which Is taken now so that It climaxes the tragedy, as It should. Between these points there are the pretty comedy of the col loquy with the nurse In the gar den, girlish finely thought out and natural; the maidenly modesty of the meeting with Romeo in the cell of Friar Laurence, where the rapture of love flashes In the rapt gaze of the lovers as they go to be married; the agony of the part ing; the supreme emotion of the interview with Laurence when Ju Met seeks a way out of her tragic perplexities, and then the heslta tlon, the doubt, the terror, the pow er of the potion scene, and ofter these beaties the simple, direct, direful tragedy of the death." Another San Francisco critic, Evelyn Wells, writes in the. Call and Post: 'Eight hundred times this Juliet has lifted the poleon potion to her Hps and died to an audience's tears. And still her playing was as fresh ly sweet as on that first night in New York when she was acclaimed by critics there the Juliet of this age. 'Jane Cowl la Jane Cowl that Is enough. Her audience knew Dodge Brothers SPECIAL TDURINE CAR Half the pleasure of buying a motor car rests in the conviction that you have exercised a sensible choice. BONESTEELE MOTOR CO. what to expect she did not dis appoint them. Rut Rollo Peters was different. 'Rollo Peters Is Romeo! Romeo as he loved and suffered In Ver ona, as Shakcaspeare knew him. Somehow this young eon of our best known California artist, Char les Rollo Petors, la a delicious sur prise for the West to have given the stage. He is so many things. Artist, designer, actor and now, Romeo. His is the heaviest, hardest role. There is much good work in the company, much fine acting. Jessie Ralph, the nurse, brings delicately controlled comedy to the drama enough to make, never to distract. Charles Brokaw, as Mercuto, wins rounds of applause In his own right, and Gordon Burby thunders into magnificent parental anger as Capulet. But Rollo Peters', work makes one understand the splendid attention he has been given to the Bast." A permit to ooerate in Oregon was issued to the Hunt Brothers Packing company, which is or ganized under the laws of Dela ware. W. G. Allen of Salem is named as attorney-in-fact for Oer- gon. E Minneapolis, Miun., Juno 6. (A. P.) Renewal of discussions regarding substitution of words In the second article of the apos tles creed, appeared likely as the synodical council of the Lutheran Augustana synod met here today to prepare the business to come be fore its convention next week. The synod last year voted to substitute "hades" for "hell" Id the apostles creed, as well as to chango "holy ghost" to holy spirit." Both changes were made to conform to the American stand ard version of the Bible, which has been adopted as more accurate than the King James translation. The council r-nnounceil that the substitution did not imply a re pudiation of the doctrine of the existence of hell, but related only to the state of Christ following his crucifixion and death.
