About 100 Mazainns hiked over from I'rahl, on the Oregon Electric, eight in! Ian away. J. E. Teeedalc of Portland lead the hikers. They were met at the hill by Albert To.ier, custodian of the park, nnd a Ma.ama of 40 year, and escort ed to the grounds where Mazamas, who had preceded in machines, had dinner spread. In the after noon J. K. Teesdale, of Ladd & Tilton bank, Portland, gave on hour's talk upon provisional gov ernment history and advised that nvery Oregon citizen who could possibly attend the annual meet ings in Provisional Government park to do so. This is wiietn er names signed to referendum pe Hons filed with the secretary of state can be withdrawn by him at the request of the signers. Yester day he received about 200 postal cards requesting that names he ithdrawn from the referendum petitions for the bus bill when these are filed in hie office. The attempted withdrawals were inspired, it is said, by thg associa tion of county judgon and comniis- ioners, who are bitterly fighting the referendum and who sent form postcards to several thousand sign cry of the petitions requesting that they atn them and send them to the secretary of state. DALLAS NINE DEFEATS FALLS CITY TOSSERS Dallas. Or., May 20. Dallas gave Falls City on unmerciful drubbing Sunday in the second baseball game played on the local grounds this season. The final score was 20 to 0, the Falls City boys failing to score off the offer ings of Moser. The victory puts Dallas into second place in the Polk county league with Independ ence leading. Mitw Djgna Larson will accom liany him for a visit. Mr. and Mrs Richard Hansen of Washington were at Silverton Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Hansen formerly made their home here. Alfred Jensen, Oscar Satern and Harold Katern returned to Silver ton, Sunday evening from a fish ing trip on the Alsea. The boy reported a catch of 90 fish during their absence. Dr. James K. Webb of Mt. Angol has been appointed area physician and examiner fur the local order of Kagles. The next meeting of the Luth eran Brotherhood lm been called for June lti at St. John's church. A ' ,p.i I REOPEN PAPER TRUST CASE Washington, May 26 (By Asso ciated Press) A supreme court re view was granted Monday In ()ie government ' unsuccessful suit again t the Pacific States Paper Trade association, the Portlnnd; Paper Trade association, the Spok ane Paper and Stationery company and others charged with having restrained Interstate commerce in paper and paper product oil the Pacific coast and in the Rocky mountain states. A breakdown In Oregon morals, or perhaps a poor grade of moon shine, is causing an increase In the number of patients at the statu hospital for the Insane whose in sanity is cuusea oy alcohol, -according to statistics furnished by Or. It. E. Lee Steiner, superintend ent of the hospital. The statistics show that ill the p re-prohibit ion days, with the years 1912 to 1914 as an example, the nuinper of alcoholic patients was a little over 7 per cent from total. Then pronioition came on and the percentage dwindled. It was less than 5 V. per cent from 1914 to 191G, lent than 3 per cent from 10 Hi 191S, 2' per cent from 1915 to 1920. Then the percentage began to climb again. From 1922 to 1924 it rose to over 4 per cent, and for the six months ending April 1, 1925, the percentage was nearly & per cent. Dr. Steiner says the number of syphiletic patients ie also increas ing. FOREST PATROL TO START JULY 1 San Francisco, May 26 Head quarters of the United States or est service here announced tqday that an airplane fire patrol it to be established for California, Ore Kon, Washington, Idaho and Mon tana on July 1 nnd will continue throughout the summer and fall fire season. l-'lve bases will be established, one each In northern and southern California, one In Oregon, one in Washington nnd one in either past crn Washington, northern Idaho or western Montana. Eighteen, air planes will be used. Santa Monica will be the base In southern Cali fornia. None of the other bases have been selected na yet. The pilots will be recruited from the officers of the army reserve corps but the mechanics will be from the enlisted forces for the moat part. Nelson held a rally at the Eugene Field auditorium Saturday even ing. A group or parents and friends were present to listen to the program and watch the demon stration the girls gave at the close of the evening's entertainment. The evening opened with the ticout song followed by opening exercises. After this Mrs. Nelson, the captain, presented the second class badges and Mrs. Gordon Mc Call spoke on "The Uso of Merit Badges.' The merit badges were then presented by the court of awards. The girls also demonstrated bed making, table setting and stretch er mukiug. Particular mention in due the art work of the girls which was exceptionally attractive and well done. The vases which were decorated my Anna Lehman who won the artmts's badge, at tracted considerable Oavorable comment. Some of the designs were original and others the little girl had copied from wall papers. The wax beads were also very at tractive On eaeli chain were from eight to ten beads of wax.
