A new problem relative to ref
erendum petitions confronts Sec
retary of State Ivozer, and has
been put up to the attorney gen
eral for solution. This is wiietn
er names signed to referendum pe
Hons filed with the secretary of
state can be withdrawn by him at
the request of the signers. Yester
day he received about 200 postal
cards requesting that names he
ithdrawn from the referendum
petitions for the bus bill when
these are filed in hie office.
The attempted withdrawals were
inspired, it is said, by thg associa
tion of county judgon and comniis-
ioners, who are bitterly fighting
the referendum and who sent form
postcards to several thousand sign
cry of the petitions requesting
that they atn them and send
them to the secretary of state.
DALLAS NINE DEFEATS
FALLS CITY TOSSERS
Dallas. Or., May 20. Dallas
gave Falls City on unmerciful
drubbing Sunday in the second
baseball game played on the local
grounds this season. The final
score was 20 to 0, the Falls City
boys failing to score off the offer
ings of Moser. The victory puts
Dallas into second place in the
Polk county league with Independ
ence leading.

REOPEN PAPER TRUST CASE

ciated Press) A supreme court re
view was granted Monday In ()ie

restrained Interstate commerce in
paper and paper product oil the
Pacific coast and in the Rocky
mountain states.
A breakdown In Oregon morals,
or perhaps a poor grade of moon
shine, is causing an increase In
the number of patients at the statu
hospital for the Insane whose in
sanity is cuusea oy alcohol, -according
to statistics furnished by
Or. It. E. Lee Steiner, superintend
ent of the hospital.
The statistics show that ill the
p re-prohibit ion days, with the
years 1912 to 1914 as an example,
the nuinper of alcoholic patients
was a little over 7 per cent from
total. Then pronioition came on
and the percentage dwindled. It
was less than 5 V. per cent from
1914 to 191G, lent than 3 per cent
from 10 Hi 191S, 2' per cent from
1915 to 1920.
Then the percentage began to
climb again. From 1922 to 1924
it rose to over 4 per cent, and for
the six months ending April 1,
1925, the percentage was nearly &
per cent.

or western Montana. Eighteen, air
planes will be used. Santa Monica
will be the base In southern Cali
fornia. None of the other bases
have been selected na yet.
The pilots will be recruited from
the officers of the army reserve
corps but the mechanics will be
from the enlisted forces for the

Field auditorium Saturday even
ing. A group or parents and
friends were present to listen to
the program and watch the demon
stration the girls gave at the close
of the evening's entertainment.
The evening opened with the
ticout song followed by opening
exercises. After this Mrs. Nelson,
the captain, presented the second
class badges and Mrs. Gordon Mc
Call spoke on "The Uso of Merit
Badges.' The merit badges were
then presented by the court of
awards.
The girls also demonstrated bed
making, table setting and stretch
er mukiug. Particular mention in

and well done. The vases which

who won the artmts's badge, at

Stork Visits Twice
Mill City. Or., May 26.-

stork was a busy bird here over
the week-end, leaving an 8-pound
h.iy at the home of Mr. und Mrs.
Dan Zaferntos and a 7-pound boy

Woods. All concerned reported to

lowing injuries received at the
lumber camps late Saturday aft
ernoon. Funeral services will be
held at Miller cemetery Tuesday
afternoon with Rev. J. A. Bennett

The boy is survived by his fa
ther and mother, Mr. and Mrs.
Jesse Barkhurst, a sister, Eva, and
a brother, Kermit.

charge rape, and Otto Schmidt,

quency of a minor. These cases

by Justice of the Peace Anderson
at Grand Hondo and no decision
has been announced. All are out
under bond. Holman and the oth
er four are all Involved with the
same girl.
