Fred Carr, who has charge of the Northwestern, which makes he run on the Willamette river between Portland and Salem, went to Portland yesterday to con. for with representatives of. rival teanisuip lines operating between ortland aud San Francisco. An agreement was reached with one of the lines some two months ago whereby special transportation ates were secured directly from Salem to San Francisco. Officials of t he oceau line later changed their minds, however, and failed to carry through tho agreement A new line has now been estab lished In competition with the old Portland-San Francisco line, and Carr expects to drive some deal with representatives of one or the ther of the companies.
