land has as its target Salem, which
incurred Franklin's wrath by win
ning the state title. In general the

in Salem's favor, an easy bunch
of opponents being selected for the

in Salem last week. "Franklin
was not a member of the state as
sociation, like the rest of us, but
was allowed to participate only
through the courtesy extended by
us.
"Incidentally ft fa worthy of
note that Claire Scallon, captain
of the Franklin team, refused to
shake hands with John Drager of
the Salem team nt the close of the
game. You may talk all you want
to about courtesy but that Is one
thing I never want our boys to
overlook.

TEACHER PASSES ON
Miss Grace Shields, instructor
In the first grade at Washington
portable school, died early this
morning as a result of pneumonia
brought on by Influenza. She
had been sick for a week.
Mln Shields wan teaching her
fourth year in Salem public
schools. She taught a class in
first grade 1 oca ten In the senior
i-fgh 'school building last year.
Previous to that she was an In
structor at Garfield school. She
taught at Scotts Mills two years,
Jefferson twe years and Woodburn
;ne year. Miss Shields was a grad
uate of Monmouth normal school.
Her place is being taken by Mrs.
Agnes Booth.

all Intents and purposes hot In
pursuit of George Hunt, who had
been taken from the jail to go to
court.
Burkhart had taken Hunt up to
tho office to get tho prisoner's
hat, which was behind the coun
ter. Burkhart went after tho hat
leaving the prisoner outside the
counter. Burkhart reached over,
took the hat. and when he turned
iround there was nn Hunt in sight
It was then that Burkhart made
his mad dash, calling on all good
men and true to come to the aid
of the party.
When he got around the counter
Burkhart stopped, the eager look
on his face changing to a blank
one.
Hunt had merely leaned over to
tic one of his shoe laces. He could
not be seen by Burkhart from be
hind the counter.
So tho man hunt ended almost
as soon as It started.
Astoria Has Fire
Astoria, Ore., Mar. 18. Fire
early today did estimated damage
of $4,000 to the Louvre hotel at
Twelfth and Astor streets. Several
occupants were forced to flee
from the building.

CROSSING PLANS
Plans for the new overhead cross
lng structure on the proposed new
road between Marion and Jeffer
son over the Southern Pacific
tracks havj been submitted to the
Marion county court by the state
highway department and bids on
the structure will be received at a
meet ins f the highway commis
sion in Portland on March 26.
