senate today in open session
confirmed the nomination of
John G. Sargent of Vermont
to be attorney general.
The nomination waa con
firmed without a record vote.

The nam? of Mr. Sargent was
sent to the capttul after Charles
H Warron, twice rejected by the
senate had declined to take ft re
cess appointment to the attorney
general tiip and after senate lead
ers had assured the White House
there was a fair prospect of quick
approval of the nominee.
Co-incident with the sending of
Mr. Sargent s name to the senate,
the White House made public an
exchange of correspondence be
tween the president and Mr. War
ren in which both made reference
to the fight against the tatter's
confirmation as "political contro
versy." Mr. Coolidgds letter re
newed his offer of a recess ap
pointment and Mr. WarrenB decli
nation on the ground that his ac
ceptance would prolong the con
troversy to the possible annoyance
of the administration.
Mr. Sargent received his educa
tion at Tufts college and was ad
mltted to the bar In 1890.
Mr. Sargent is a former attor
new general of the state and fs
characterized by his friends as
"the hest lawyer in New Enfr
land." He is 64 years old.

the death of H, H. Kuenxli a year
ago have any bearing on the sudden
death of Fred M. Swartz, brother
in-law off Keunzii, in a dynamite
blnet last Saturday morning?
In the long train of co-incidences
which has made the circum
stanced surrounding these two
deaths notable, this is still an
other co-incidence to add to the
baffling chain which has been so
mysteriously forged, link by link,
over a period of mouths.

residents of the community. Gov
crnop Pierce instructed Attorney
General Van Winkle to look into

chargeu with having some knowl
edge of events leading up to his
brother-in-law's tragic ending.
The attorney general placed the
matter in the hands of Assistant
Attorney General LUjeqvist, ex
perienced prosecutor, who has had
many mysteries left to him to
olve. -

the supreme court in the appeals
brought by Oregon to have sus
tained its law which would re
quire children between the age of
$ and 16 to -attend schools con
ducted by the state.
Counsel for the state again em
phasized the contention advanced
yesterday that the police powers
of the state would be equally ae
potent in matters of education a
those of morals and health and in
