Si. PAGE SIX 'THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON BEARCATS PLAY THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 1925 With the first home basketball game of tlie present season luota dig fur next Saturday ulght, thu Jieurcats are practicing behind clisi'd dours. iiasketball men a1 the university have refuted to f)l vulze whelher or not auytb'uK new is being developed to bpring on Oregon, who Is the oppoaout In Saturday a clash. Coach Uathbun and hi squad returned yenterday Iroui a tour Into Washington, on which the Willamette) aggregation woo two games and lout two. Culli-ga of 1'uget Sound and Wanning ion State Normal school were defeat ed, but the two conference til', wita Whitniau and the Umvera'ty of Washington, were dropped by the Itenrcats. Kepoits from Willa Walla indlrate that the Willamette-Whitman game might poiui bly have ended differently had not Hobertaon, stellar forwarj, been laid up with a bad foot. "We couldn't very well play with four men," says Ktithbun, "so we jutt let him stand there." Although the first half ended 17 to 6 in favor ot the MUaionariea, the Wil lamette team came from belr'jd and led several times during the second frame. In all four of the games Fas nacht, stellar Dearcat forward, was closely v-ttched and seldom broke away for a counter. The attention paid to "Kazzy'' usually benefitted the other members of the team, however, all ot thorn managing to B"ore with consist ency. Kathbun has announced that In Saturday's game the Willamette lineup will be the Biime as during the northern trip. Kasnarht and .Hat.ertson will hold down the fur ward berths, Hartley will occupy the pivot position and Kimnel and KricMon will play guard. J. Laf ky F Dallas, Or., Jan. 22. Desire to aielc freedom from a "cave woman seems (o have prompted a divorce proceeding filed in circuit court here by Lawrence W. Cave against his wife and mother-in-law. In hia complaint, filed by Robin Day, Salem attorney. Cave alleges that bis wife hit him over : head with a rolling pin and struck him on the leg wan a large rock rendering him unable to walk for some time. He alleges that bis wife, Mae Cave, left him in December, 1124 and later asked him to meet t train at Independence. After i fruitless wait he returned borne and received a long distance call to meet her the next day. After another fruitless vigil Cave re turned home and found that his home bad been entered and the household goods carted away dur ing his absence. He also charges his wife with using vile language in addressing him and of being unduly familiar with strange men. Cave names Mary Huffman, hie mother-in-law, jointly in the coia plalnt, charging that she poisoned the mind of f.:rs. Cave against tm and Incited trouble, threatening to disinherit her daughter If ehe remained with him. The Caves were married In Portland In April, 1923, and have a baby boy. Mr. Cave aska for a decree of divorce and custody of the child. People go where they ran mik a living. The family Is the funda mental unit of any people. Tuc family must have a place to etay. WIkmi rents do not pay fur this the turn Ily is enjuying them through lo; to tiiH owner or to hie patriotism or chanty. Families cau not g' something for nothing very oftc nor very hmg. Note the ever shitting nho.it of the eon finned renter. Generally speaking it I: never true that you ran rent cheaper than you au own. Many have learned litis the last few yearn. Many more would know il if they would properly h ilaiwc their accounts. More will rcil ze this iu the near future. Savings arrounts, building and loan associations, muall initial aut monthly payments, sales termt have made It possible and safe lei the wage earner or business mni. to own his own borne. Uni ted means or lark of ready money It now no bar to the purchase. All too often wo hear the argu ment that resilience lu a locality is temporary; that promotion or l.ick of employment might force re moval to other localities; or that such changes mean a loss on the purchase price. A little fore thought and friendly conference with bankers and realtors will al most always avoid any sacrlfke. The true me a, u re of the selling price of a home Is oftener "What ran you do with the money In the new location?" Should property have to be sold at a reduction from the piir cl ose price we should not necessarily aasi'nie this to be a loss. The family has had the uuc and benefit of the house la the meantime. Anyway what they get out of the sale of the bouse Is clear money gain over a bunch of r?n receipts. We know a family thL was a bit peeved when forced by the law of supply aud demand t purchase a home. It was paid for in a few years. When opportunity came they disposed of it for (4000 cash. 1 his enabled them to buy to advantage In their new loci tion. Can the reader picture tlu' difference between J40U0 in the bank than having tu depend on mendj and relatives or even th charily of strangers when i,uch i change of location occurs? The owner of a home does many LhlngH 111 or about it that the ten ant Kes without or else pays a big price for. A home should be mure than a place to eat and sloop. Home owners stand higher, are more influential, enjoy better t-redit, develop a more natisfie.l elin, become better citizens and finally hold better piftiitious tu bs than the chronic rentois. Dividends of this class are so bet ter than the dollar and cent re turns. After all the latter are de sirable only because they enable one to purchase the former. Since it Is cheaper to own than to rent a home what ran a family spend its earnings on that would bring as much pleasure, genuine satis faction or real live interest In liv ing as well ae spiritual, mental, moral and material advancement than the ownership of the home.
