SAW GOLD ON BOHOM OF NAPO RIVER1N BRAZIL That there la an tmmenM quan- tltr ol gold In the Napo river. which, flow. Into the head waters ot the Amaion, was the statement mail last night br A. H. Kings bury. famouB South American ex plorer, in an Interview after his address at Waller hall. He could see the gold strewn all along the river bottom lor a distance of 200 miles, he said. Analysis showed that some of it was pyrates of Iron, or "fool's gold." but most of It was genuine. During lelsurs moments members of his party washed out a small quantity ot the mineral, Mr. Kingsbury stated. When asked whether prospect or, could bring the gold out the explorer replied that the risk would be too great to justify tho atlompt. "Twenty well armed men, who knew their business. could probably get to the river without much difficulty." he snld. "They might scars the In dians away so that they could work there for a month or even longer. Then some morning they would find about half a dozen of their number dead poison In the drinking water. Or they might get killed when they left camp. They would have to keep two or three men hunting for game all the time, and one ot those poison ed darts " The Kapo river, says Mr. Kingsbury, flows through what is probably the leant known sec tion of the world. The country Is so wild that International boun daries have not been established there nobody knows whether the river is in Colombia or In Kquador. The ahortest and safest way to approach the river is over the Andes mountains from tho west coast. To Illustrate how thick the gold lies on the river bottom, the explorer told how It washed thru the bottom ot his leaky boat, to gether with a large quantity of sand. "I don't say the bottom of the boat was literally covered with gold," was his conservative atatement. "Hut I do say that it could be seen very plainly, and small quantities ot it could be picked up with the fingers." Mr. Kingsbury was sent across the South American continent under the auspices ot a mission ary organization. He has announc ed that he intends to go Into the building business in Portland The gold can stay there so far as be Is concerned, he says. In the matter of the estate of Hnrry H.
