The year 1924 was one of the most successful in the spurting circles that balem baa ever enjoyed. Both professional and amateur sports have bad a big year and the pros pects for another good year are promising. The Salem Senators, a profes sioual baseball club, had one of the best seasons in years, due to the business-like handling o "Ulddie" Bishop, who acted ai manager and player, Blshoo iiisUi several improvements in the club house and gave the locula a fist, scrappy nine. This was the lirst lime for several years that the Senators have ended on the right aid--1 of the ledger. As for tuc gamcs won, they were more than successful. Tbey played in some of the fastest company in the stale and lost only six borne games. Four of these were to the high salaried Kelso and Longvlew nines. High school baseball was nlso good aud the locals are expecting to have a better lineup than last year, as most of the veterans will be back In tbe harness with one more year of . experience. Caugh oll, scrappy receiver for the hign school, will be absent from the lineup when the call comes to pluy ball, but Huntington will have plenty of good material. Willamette li-l a fairly good team and, although they fulled to shine they gave a good account of themselves. High school football was good for Salem as far as tho games went, tho only thing marring the season for the red and black was the lack of games. Efforts were unavailing to extend the 111 ill iicnooi looioall season ten days. The present season Is declared to he loo short as the Wlllaniet: valley schools do not open until uctolier. which makes Ihem hustl to got Into shape and close the sea. son by 1 hanksgiving. Willamette fuiled to do nn7. Il'lng brilliant on the gridirjj I hey had wonderful hopes of winning renin wnen Ihey held !lle University of Oregon eleven to tie in the first game of the season. Dut did nol Improve us the season .Hew along and consequently fin isned toward tho bottom of tu. ladder. Willamette la completily out of Its class with the big col lege teams and would do better In league of tho smnlter schools, which Is being agitated. Hie basketball season Is lust itartlng and any efforts to predict tho possible resuirs of the season would bo futile. Both the Salem high school aud Willamette un veralty have brighter prospects man uiey nave Had for years. Wll lamette has one of the bust ached ulee that they have had fur sev eral seasons. They are to inecl the University of Washington and University of Southern California aud many of the other strong teams on tbs local floor. They snouiu at least get and even break during the season. The high school bns been going good In the tew p-ainea they have had this far and they will more ban likely be championship von tenders. Tho ruling that all high school couches must be faculty; members will cause several of the Portland schools to lose their pre's- nt coaches, but will give tho io als a chiinco ti meet them. Salem is given a big boost iu the porting (ircles as the state iias- Uetball championship is decided here under tho suspires of tin Wllljmette university. Salrit high wau forced out ot tho tourna ment last year duo to tho protest if Independence, who protested ho playing ot lirant Kallin N The smokers will contlnuo to be a feature; during toe winter sea son. Much Interest has been taken In the athletic events at tbe Y. M. C. A. during the past year and Inter est bas been kra at the open house program given during tbe Christmas holidays. Tbe commer cial basketball series under the direction of Bob Boardman ot tbe "Y" has not flourished financial ly, but tbey have had a good sea son and the teams are to vie for honors this week when they play the finals for tho league cham pionship. Anderson ft Brown and the Union Oil are tbe two contender The T. M. C. A. is centering most of their efforts on the new building to be erected. The cam paign for the funds was the out standing event ot the season. A swimming campaign was held last summer under the directiou ot Professor Corsan at New yarn. A camp was held by the "x "'with about thirty members from Salem. They also supervised the play ground and uoaramaa reports big attendance during the season. Tbey will have charge ot two this coming season. Gymnasium etats- ea are held dally with about 11 cljwn during tbe week. Both tennis and golf had bright Tear locally. Willamette bad a brilliant tennis team last year. The team consisted of Will lam Walsh, Emmel and Mickey. They met and defeated Albany Monmouth, Unlverstiy ot Oregon and Lintield. Oregon was defeat ed four eets to one. Tbey entered the Pacific coast conference meat held at Eugene and Emmel gave Wallace Scott, of the University i Washington, his toughest game. Scott won the Intercollegiate championship ot the country. The conference will be held at Cor- valUs this year. Swimming is not one ot the Sa lem sports outside ot the classes held at the Y. M. C. A. PRIVATE MOTOR E Opposition to any plan which would take the Salem public auto park out of the jurisdiction ot the city has been expressed by Homer ti. bmiin, member ot the presen parks board. "An auto park should never be allowed to fall into the hands of private Interests," says Smith. According to announcement the park will be opened for the use of tha public on March 1, 1925. Agitation has been started to erect a large community hall on the camp grounds. The building as plannel would probably be a largo one room structure where pubtio entertainments could be held. Secretar y Wilson of the Salem chamber of commerce has stated that he can supply speakers lor programs at frequent inter vals. In 1924 (800 was spent In btiild- ign 16 new tent houses to offset this expenditure a charge of 60 cents was levied for each auto us ing the park. Money for this source paid for the new houses and loft a comfortable surplus for tbe coming season. The board will authorize a continuation of the admisison charge, it le said, and will put all money that U taken in Into Improvements on the grounds. Our prediction stated, that ''Cars selling around the price of the STAR would, within a few months, be compelled to change their designs to conform to the STAR principles of construction, or their sales would materially drop off," and we explained that - what we meant was, that thev would have to use a DISC CLUTCH, SEMI-ELIPTIC SPRING, and many other needed improvements, such as the STAR then contained. And Our Prediction Has Come True But with all of the improvements made by the manufacturers of low priced cars, to this date STAR stands out pre-eminently the peer of them all, and is truly "Tomorrows Car Today" and will continue to be ahead of all competitors, in its class, for performance, economy, beauty, ease of handling, and durability, and here are only a few of the reasons: Star has a genuine Continental RED SEAL motor that is free from vibra tion. NO OTHER LOW PRICED CAR HAS SUCH A UNIT. Star has perfected SHOE FOUR WHEEL BRAKES as regular equipment NO OTHER LOW PRICED CAR HAS THIS FEATURE. Star has force feed lubrication thru drilled crank shaft and cam shaft to every bearing in the motor which positively eliminates the burning out of bearings. NO OTHER LOW PRICED CAR HAS THIS. STAR has a Hot Spot on the intake manifold insuring quick starting and eliminates spluttering and jerking. NO OTHER LOW PRICED CAR HAS THIS. Star has a TUBULAR BACK BONE that prevents all strains and twists on the body. NO OTHER LOW PRICED CAR HAS THIS FEATURE. STAR i? so constructed that one unit does not have to be disturbed to get at another unit, thus saving at least 50 per cent on labor bills as compared with other low priced cars.
