Van ftevort wanted to know what tho city engineer knew about this, and KnKlneer Hitch Kosers replied that Klett had never obtained a firado from the cnwlneer's office. Mayor CJiesy naked lloi?ers to look into It, deelnrinx that if It is built accord ing lo tho wronn Rrnde tho city can take the walk out. J;lds for the construction of sev eral new sidewalks were read from two bidders, Adolph Iiomberk and (i. M. Hltncrnl Starts Flrc-works A spirited discussion nrose over 1 resolution introduced by Abler inn n Hlmerul pnivldhiff that the City deliver n quit claim deed to Annuel rhillips nnd others lelallvo to a portion of Division street be tween UtKh nnd Church streets, l'lio parts of (ho street affected. It as wild, hnvo never been vacated. "Doesi that mean we are shlnn away out stroets?" asked Alder-, man Purvlno. "That's It exactly," answered Vandevort, "I don't think the council has power to give away the city's streets," interposed City Attorney Smith. "We already have given away four acres of that Etreet," declar ed Vandevort. "Wo have given away thousands of dollars." "I think that was by vacation," explained the attorney. "Well we've given 'er away, that's a cinch," Vandevort assert ed. AlJerman Siineril, who intro duced the resolution, said a quit claim deed hail already been given one person nnd tho council should not discriminate against the oth ers. Van ratten moved that the city engineer h.-wo an abstract of the street made, but this was voted down, and Slinenil's resolution was referred to the istrect committee, tho city engineer and tho city at torney. Tn males Not Machines Charley Maxwell, who a few evenings ago assayed to operate a tamale wagon on the street, com plained that he had been stopped by the officers, the alternative be ing that he pay a license of $15 a day. Whether the city ordinance against selling merchandise, me chanical devices, etc., unless the vendor pay a heavy graduated lic ense fee beginning with $15 a day, would apply to Maxwell caused n debate. Mayor Clesy wanted lo know if a tarnalo was a mechanical device, and the city attorney said it was merchandise and would come under the ordinance. Jiut all the council men were for Maxwell, and took no action. This means that lie will operate without a license. "I am a taxpayer nnd try to be a good citizen," said Maxwell in making his plea to tho council. "I don't want to be a loafer. Yet I applied to Salem employers for work and was told that they want ed to save tho Jobs for the college boys. So I learned how to make tntnales, and started my wagon. I was stopped in nn hour. ELLIOTT DEXTER Klllott Dexter Is a firm bcllcv in tho adage that "Variety Is ihc Spice ol Life." Having just fin ished the most conspicuous part he ever has portrayed on tho scre?i: that of the husband in "The Fist Set" he is coming forth as a tt.r in the spoken drama and this city has been included in the bru I tour he will play in "The Havoc," by H. S. Sheldon. Ucxtcr lias a large following among patrons of the picture the;i tcru. He has been identified with some ol tho most noteworthy screen productions that have been presented in recent years. Among them are "The Romance of the Redwoods," "We Can't Have Kv ery tiling," "Tho Squaw Man." "Don't Change Your Husband," "Anatol." "Only Thirty-eiyat," "Something to Think About," "Flaming Youth," "For Iletter o- for Worse," and "Common Liw," "The Fast Set'' which ho has just completed ia William DeMiUe'a production of "Spring Cleaning." For the purposes of his 3tr-jy-ing venturo In the spoken drama Mr. Dexter has been particularly fortunate in securing "The Havoc" which was originally presented In the east for two seasons by Henry Miller and proved a popular at traction. It is a modern presenta- wulrllng through the vortex ol er- ery day life. The Btory is engross ing throughout and gives an en tirely new and unique twist to lbs everlasting eternal triangle. Al though Mr. Dextor has appeared under the management of the late Charles Frohman, David Belasco, Henry Miller and others, in dra matic productions he never has equalled in genuinely appealing acting the heights attained in 'The Havoc." It is a play for ev eryone nnd Mr. Dexter makes It an Sciatic Neuritis Tho sciatic nervj situated at the back of the hip Joint is frequently the snblect of Neuritis, giving : to tho painful disease Sciatica.
