"The Increased charges on pas- lenger automobiles from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana territory Louia have varied from $62.50 up o 1264 per carload. The increase bn trucks would have been from 1133.75 up to $387.30 a Carload. From eastern points the increasees would have been even greater, In some Instances as much as $450 k carload. These increases have lio reference to the. general iu- krease in freight rates which have been made on all hues, and would Pave been in addition to those most reteut increases to the Gar tners. The San Francisco races will do much to help other speed way cities to gte better cards. "fehave taken an option on the Tanforan property and Its pur chase will be concluded just as soon as our preliminary plans are completed." Rayl, who was one of the promi nent automobile dealers here in the early days, before he retired to devote his time to large ranch ing interests, conceived the idea of having a car built in San Francis co to represent this city in the western and eastern classics. It will be piloted by a local driver. Inserting: the Tube. When inserting a new inner tube or replacing the old one which has been repaired, the in side of the casing should first be wiped out with a damp cloth to remove any sand or grit that may be present. A single, sharp point ed grain of sand between the cas ing and the tube Is very likely to forhce Its way through the tube, causing the picture. This is the real cause of many a mysterious puncture. Warms Gasoline for Primer. A new automobile accessory sends warmed, gasoline to the pri mer, ready for ignition, when a starting pedal is pressed. Insurance for automobiles was first written in England in 1898. Cars Worth Half Million Are To Race Tacoma, Wash;, May 21. A fortune will be invested in ne v racing cars to be seen on the na tion's speedways this year, accord ingto advance information receiv ed at the offices of the Tacoma speedway. It is reported that 20 ars are ready or under construc tion with a total valuation of $500,000. Among the new cars to be seen at Tacoma will be two or three under construction by Louis Chev rolet, dean of all American race drivers, who has juit the racing game. Three cars are building in Kansas City in addition to several new Monroe, Frontenac and Dues enberg special racing creations. Report has it that Cliff Durant, who has always been at the wheel of a Chevrolet special, is trying to induce his father, former head of the General Motors company, to build two racing cars to bear the family name. Several foreign cars will soon be in the United States and it is expected that at uast two of these cars, either French or Italian may come to Tacoma for the events of July 4. Early reports from Indianapolis say that there have ben 25 drivers already entered and that more cars are expected within the next two weeks. W. C. Baldwin, president of the Tacoma Speedway, will be in Indianapolis for the Memorial day race of May 30, and will have he pick of the cars at the Indiana track. The Tacoma track's purse of $25,000 with first money of $10, 000, In addition to 400 points for the national championship of 1921, is creating greater interest in the track than ever fore and the race of 250 miles is another fea ture that is appealing to speed kings. "Interest in the July 4 race this year exceeds all past years," says President Baldwin. "The demand for grandstand seats and parking spaces in front of the pits from racing fans in three states is taken to indicate that the crowd this year will exceed all previous rec ords at the track. We will be pre pared to handle 50,000 people in a short space of time. "Motor car racing has come back since the war strong than ever before, cars are faster, driv ers are devoting every hour to practice work and automobile builders are watching this year's events with kener interest than they have in, past years. Tacoma and nothwest racing fans ale go ing to see the most wonderful cars ever presented and the race this year should bring countless thrills and shatter old records for speed and endurance." Speedway tickets are already on sale at all branch offices of the automobile club In western Wash ington. In addition the Hotel Grayport in Hoquiam and the Ho tel Washington in Aberdeen are speedway ticket offices this year. Bureaus are also to be opened in Spokane and Portland. . ll Be careful! Tires Getting Better Every Year, Claim One of the noteworthy features regarding the manufacture of au tomobile tires in this country is the fact that during the last five years tires have improved so greatly in - quality that the aver age number of tires used on an au tomobile during a year has drop ped from five to considerably un der four. This drop has come, too, In the face of an Increase in winter driv ing so large as to be a vital ele ment In the calculation. Many cars now operate twelve months in the year but in spite of this in creased period of service, the av erage annual consumption' of tires per car has steadily fallen. With the return to normal times and with money less plentiful, car owners are certain to watch their expense bills more closely. The ex ercise of only a moderate degree of care by the car owners will lift the average mileage secured from tires to a point many thousands of miles above any hitherto reached. Cutting- Glass Circle It is possible to break out cir cles of glass, such as lenses for headlight, by making a number of straight cuts from the edge of the glass and breaking these sections out one at a time. Be caeful not to cut inside the line of the circle to be cut. The Elgin Six IS ALL SET FOR THE VACATIONIST The New 1921 Elgin Six Is Here The New 1921 Prices f. o. b.
