Road Districts To Ballot On Tax Proposals Independence, Nov. 13. Road districts Nos. 9, 15 and 16 will hold a special election November 27 to. vote on the question of levy ing a 10 mill tax for the construc tion of good roads. Petitions call ing for such an election were sub mitted to the county court a few days ago and the court designat ed Saturday, November 27th, as the day of election. Road district No. 9 embraces the territory south of Independ ence including Buena Vista and Parker. It is estimated that a 10 mill levy will provide $8200 for the district and in the event that the proposition receives the sanc tion of the voters in that dlsrict(, the county court wll increase the fund by appropriating $12,500. Road district No. 16 is the ter ritory north of this city extending to the paved road at Brunk's cor ners, and in this district it ia esti mated that a 10 mill levy will pro duce $8100. In the event that the 10 mill levy carries the county court will also appropriate $12, 500 to the road fund in district No. 16. Road district No. 15 comprises the city of Independence, and it is figured that $4826 can be raised by the 10 mill tax levy. No county money is to be appropriated in this district, but the city will be able to make the necessary im provements with the money deriv ed from the 10 mill levy, if it car ries, and it is the general opinion t M H that the plan wll receive the en dorsement of electors in each dis- j trict. The election in district No. 9 will be held in the Buena Vista school house, in district No. 16 at the Oak Pont school house, and In district No. 15 in the city hall at Independence. Polls will be open at 2 in the afternoon in each case. In the city, providing the property owners will agree to stand half of the expense, it is thought likely that the money will be used in paving South Main street to the city limits, although no definite action has been taken in the matter. Woman Check Artist Works Monmouth Men Monmouth, Nov. 13. A bad check artist hoaxed several of the Monmouth merchants during the past week. This time the artist was a woman unci she was ac companied by a little girl. She reported that she was here visit ing Monmouth students, who are friends, and in this way obtained the confidence of the merchants without difficulty. The trick was easily turned and the checks is sued were $5 and $10, drown on B bank in Vancouver. The woman gave her name as Mrs. Snider. When investigation of her case began it was learned that she cashed several checks In Portland on the Monmouth bank, which have been returned with the same mark "no funds." It is learned that she had si small deposit in but check It out In a short time and had since left a trail of bad chocks in Washington and British Columbia. The checks aggregate a sum of i ore than $300, it Is said. Rev. H. C. Russell, formerly pastor of the Christian church in The Dalles, has accepted a call to the church in Monmouth. He lias been conneoted with the church in The Dalles for the past six years. Previous to that he was in Michigan. He preached his first sermon here last Sunday and since has been elected as pastor. He will move here as soon as he can make the necesary arrangements. J. S. Miller sold his farm near here this week to a Quaker minis ter, Mr. Pendleton, and his son, and in the deal takes over a house and lots In Salem, where the family has moved. The farm comprises 196 acres and the con sideration is said to have been $16,000. Because of the favorable weath er for farm work the grange meeting has been postponed until November 20th. At this time the members will serve dinner and a large attendance is anticipated. Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Huitt of Portland motored to. Monmouth Wednesday afternoon and remain ed over Thursday with friends. J. L. Murdock was here from Yamhill during the week visiting friends.
