Rumors are rife regarding another railroad be' tween here and Independence. ft is lad that the Valley & Slletz is ne gotlatin gtor the road from Airlie to Monmouth with a view of extending It to Independence. Another report ia that the S. P. will build the road over the old right of way purchased some time ago from the Independ ence & Monmouth Railway Co. This road was sold more than a year ago and the rails taken up. The road ged is good for the most part and the 8. P. may yet build an. electric electric road between the two cities. Bringing Up Father By George McManus Wants Referendum Orville Butler, a pioneer citizen who began voting In Polk' county about the time Monmouth sprang in to existence, has suggested a unique plan to settle the prevailing highway controversy, and intimates that he would like to see the question placed on the ballot at tha coming general election. "If it is necessary to build eight miles of paved road at a cost of $25, 000 a mile," said Mr. Butler, "in or der to get the county seat located on the highway, it would be cheaper to move the county seat to the high way." While this may seem like an idle statement, lyet it la not altogether improbable. In the event that such a thing would ever happen it would likely mean the removal of the seat to Monmouth.
