Thank you to all. - Richard Seymour, Darcy Nenow and Daarla Klages. Opal Lively Pruitt May 31, 1921 – October 16, 2020 Opal Pruitt passed away on October 16, 2020 in Hood River, OR at the age of 99. Opal was born in Wallowa, OR on May 31, 1921 to E.W. “Fisher” and Etta Pearl (Sannar) Lively. She was the fifth born of eight children. The Lively family lived in Maxville, OR where she attended first through third grades. At the end of her third grade her family moved from Maxville to Wallowa, OR where she started the fourth grade. In 1939 she graduated from Wallowa High School. Opal met the love of her life, Wallace Pruitt while in high school. On June 22, 1940 she and Wal- lace were married. From this marriage date until Wallace’s death in March 2009, they were pretty much inseparable. In the late 1940’s she and her husband started a hardware store in Wallowa which eventually became the Wallowa Western Auto. In 1955 their daughter Susan entered into their life and later, in 1957 their son Tim. The closing of the lumber mill in Wallowa created some hardships for many people in the community. Because of this, in 1964 the Pruitt family decided to move to Portland, OR. It was difficult for Opal to leave, being a fourth generation of Wallowa County, her roots ran deep. Opal began working at Columbia Christian College as a cook in the kitchen. She soon became the head cook and dietitian. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and spending more time with friends and family. Opal became a member of the Church of Christ while in high school. She was a strong dedicated Christian woman who loved the Lord with all her heart. Her positive attitude would always shine bright in tough times. She was a great inspiration and example for so many others in her life. She loved being with people, visiting with others and always saw the good in everyone. Opal enjoyed hosting all types of events in her home from dinner, birthday, anniversary parties, holiday meals to devotionals and Bible studies. She always helped and gave to others as much as she possibly could. Opal is survived by her son Tim (Tina) Pruitt of Hood River, OR; Grandchildren, Caleb Pruitt of Hood River, Major (USAF) Jake (Lindsay) Pruitt of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, Ryan Pruitt of Colville, WA; Great grandchildren, Cohen, Olivia and Cessly Opal. Numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, nieces and great-great-nephews, nieces. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, E.W. and Pearl Lively; husband Wallace Pruitt, daughter Susan Pruitt; siblings, Iris Lively Nuxall, Agnes Lively Fuller, Leonard (Perk) Lively, Elvyn Lively, Jack Lively, Gene Lively and Bob Lively. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2020 at the Wallowa Cemetery. WALLOWA COUNTY Wednesday, October 21, 2020 Early settler Erasmus Tulley dies OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 21, 1920 Erasmus H. Tulley, one of the four fi rst settlers in the lower part of the county, died Oct. 19, 1920, at his home in Wallowa. With his brother, James Tulley, and W.W. White of Enterprise and James Masterson of Elgin, Mr. Tulley came from Union county in 1873 and the four settled in the mid- dle valley. One of the most “citi- fi ed” spots in Enterprise is the auto gas and oil service station of W.C. Taylor, at Greenwood and West Sec- ond streets. It is in the paved district and Greenwood Street will be on the valley highway, which is to be built next year. Mrs. Lulu Johnson, county nurse, has examined 115 pupils and has found 243 defects of all kinds. Defects of vision, 22; of hearing, 18; of breathing, 35; of teeth, 66. Diseases of ears, 5; of throat, 82; of glands, 13. Mrs. Lulu Johnson, county nurse, went to Joseph to take charge of the chil- dren of A.W. Landers, four little girls, and prepare them for removal to Salem where they will be placed in the state tuberculosis hospital. Authorities have arrested Robert Simpson, 21, and Stephen Williams, 17, both of Wallowa. Bill Cool had the best pen of Hereford calves at the Wallowa County Stock- growers Association special calf sale. The calves, raised on the Divide on dry grass, averaged 503 pounds. The Paradise Hotel. Year unknown. 25 YEARS AGO 75 YEARS AGO Oct. 18, 1945 Capt. Keith Wilson arrived home Wednesday night. He went into the ser- vice in January of 1942 and was in the D-Day inva- sion forces and was in com- bat both in France and Ger- many until the close of the war. He received two bronze stars, a silver star, the purple heart and a number of other decorations. Word has been received that Pvt. John Hayes Trump, of Wallowa, died in a Jap- anese prison camp on July 17, 1942, of dysentery. All this time he has been listed as missing in action. There are 41 organized schools in the county, 15 of which are suspended and send their pupils (if any) to other districts. On Monday, Oct. 19, the sher- iff ’s offi ce said the steer had been found. 2:58 p.m. – Wallowa County Sheriff ’s Offi ce arrested Rayford Glenn Guil- lory, 66, of Wallowa for DUII and open container. Guillory Verle A. Bechtel October 6, 1934 – May 19, 2020 Verle A. Bechtel died May 19, 2020, at his home in Salem, Oregon, where he lived with Judy, his beloved wife of 61 years. Verle was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was born on October 6, 1934, in Wallowa, Oregon, to Mary Schaeffer and Audas E. Bechtel. He grew up on their small family farm and attended local schools. He continued his education at Eastern Oregon College, interrupting it to serve in the U.S. Army. Upon returning to Oregon, he contin- ued his education at EOU. On June 27, 1958, he married Judith Carman in Wallowa. They moved to Corvallis, and he transferred to Oregon State University where he received a B.S. degree in Agriculture in 1960. The following year he received his teaching credentials from the University of Oregon, and they relocated to Vale where he taught chemistry and math at Vale Union High School for 12 years. In the meantime he earned an M.S. in Education and an Externship in Educational Administration from EOU. Verle was an Oregon educator for 39 years and served as superintendent of the Elgin, Echo, and Athena-Weston School Districts. He retired as superintendent of the Columbia ESD. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Jack and is survived by his sister Beth Mosher, wife Judith, daughter Debra Grant, son Bruce Bechtel, son-in-law Larry Grant, daughter-in-law Lorenza Chavarria, granddaughters Katrin Grant and Ana Bechtel, and grandsons Nelson Grant and Ian Bechtel. We cherish his memory: his selflessness, caring, warmth, generosity, and love will remain with us for the rest of our lives. Jason Parks, the EHS rushing ace, surpassed the 1,000 yard mark last Fri- day night during a Wapiti League game against Nyssa.
