Opal Lively Pruitt
May 31, 1921 – October 16, 2020
Opal Pruitt passed away on October 16,
2020 in Hood River, OR at the age of 99. Opal
was born in Wallowa, OR on May 31, 1921 to
E.W. “Fisher” and Etta Pearl (Sannar) Lively.
She was the fifth born of eight children. The
Lively family lived in Maxville, OR where she
attended first through third grades. At the
end of her third grade her family moved from
Maxville to Wallowa, OR where she started
the fourth grade. In 1939 she graduated from
Wallowa High School. Opal met the love of her
life, Wallace Pruitt while in high school. On June 22, 1940 she and Wal-
lace were married. From this marriage date until Wallace’s death in March
2009, they were pretty much inseparable.
In the late 1940’s she and her husband started a hardware store in
Wallowa which eventually became the Wallowa Western Auto. In 1955
their daughter Susan entered into their life and later, in 1957 their son
Tim. The closing of the lumber mill in Wallowa created some hardships
for many people in the community. Because of this, in 1964 the Pruitt
family decided to move to Portland, OR. It was difficult for Opal to leave,
being a fourth generation of Wallowa County, her roots ran deep. Opal
began working at Columbia Christian College as a cook in the kitchen.
She soon became the head cook and dietitian. After retirement, she and
her husband enjoyed traveling and spending more time with friends and
family.
Opal became a member of the Church of Christ while in high school.
She was a strong dedicated Christian woman who loved the Lord with
all her heart. Her positive attitude would always shine bright in tough
times. She was a great inspiration and example for so many others in her
life. She loved being with people, visiting with others and always saw the
good in everyone. Opal enjoyed hosting all types of events in her home
from dinner, birthday, anniversary parties, holiday meals to devotionals
and Bible studies. She always helped and gave to others as much as she
possibly could.
Opal is survived by her son Tim (Tina) Pruitt of Hood River, OR;
Grandchildren, Caleb Pruitt of Hood River, Major (USAF) Jake (Lindsay)
Pruitt of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, Ryan Pruitt of Colville, WA;
Great grandchildren, Cohen, Olivia and Cessly Opal. Numerous nephews,
nieces, great-nephews, nieces and great-great-nephews, nieces.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, E.W. and Pearl Lively;
husband Wallace Pruitt, daughter Susan Pruitt; siblings, Iris Lively Nuxall,
Agnes Lively Fuller, Leonard (Perk) Lively, Elvyn Lively, Jack Lively, Gene
Lively and Bob Lively. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday,
October 24, 2020 at the Wallowa Cemetery.
