Wallowa County Chieftain News wallowa.com August 30, 2017 A3 36-inch, 10-pound Chinook salmon caught Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins took a spoon hook, with which the boy was after trout, and was landed after being played until tired. 100 YEARS AGO 70 YEARS AGO OUT OF THE PAST August 30, 1917 Aug. 28, 1947 Rex Hillman died at the Enterprise hospital Monday morning as the result of inju- ries suffered Sunday afternoon when he was thrown from a horse while riding after cattle. Main Street in Enterprise Saturday afternoon was lined with automobiles standing parked along the walks, while other cars were moving back and forth. Not a horse was in sight. Presently one team turned into the street. It was a Standard Oil Co. team, hauling the company’s oil tank. This one team was delivering gaso- line for all the automobiles. A Chinook salmon 36 inches long, weighing 10 pounds and 10 ounces, was caught the fi rst of the week by Charles Zell in a small stream near Hurricane Creek. The fi sh Safecrackers, who had made previous raids on the Jay Templeton service station and Tippett’s Tavern, broke into the Snyder Lumber Co. safe last Thursday night and also raided the Graingrowers offi ce. Around 150 people in Wal- lowa County attended the annual Wallowa County Pio- neers picnic and meeting held on the picnic grounds near the Hurricane Creek Grange Hall. It was the fi rst gathering of its kind in several years, due to the war. It was voted to merge the old pioneer association with the Sons and Daughters of the Pioneers. News from Wallowa: The “Seal Them Light” can- ning 4-H Club met with their leader, Mrs. Leota Henderson, Dolores Brownell sent us the identification for last week’s historical mystery photo. In the photo are Pastor LeRoy Brownell and Dolores with their children, from left, Doug, Jone- da, and Ken. It was probably taken in 1966. Rev. Brownell was pastor of the Joseph Baptist Church from 1962-69. He passed away in 2015. Dolores lives in Sweet Home, Ore. Doug lives in Sil- verton, Ore.; Ken lives in Cove; and Joneda lives in Lebanon, Ore. The couple’s younger daughter, Linda, had not been born at the time the photo was taken. She lives in Boise. Hosted by Wallowol- ogy Natural History Center. Aug. 27, 1992 An August snow storm over the weekend helped to put the damper on several forest fi res which broke out last week. Two of Wallowa County’s families were honored by the county Stockgrowers associ- ation during its dinner Satur- day evening. Mack and Marian Birkmaier won the Cattleman of the Year award, and the Yost Ranch, represented by Paul, James and Vicky Yost, was winner of the Grassman of the Year award. Three Wallowa County high school students, Car- rie Phillips, Jenni Blanchet and Jeremy Ornelas, recently spent two weeks at the Mis- soula Children’s Theatre per- forming arts camp in Montana. Out of 128 young performers accepted for the camp from all over the country, only fi ve were from Oregon. The CJD court may include just two young women in 2018, but they are the cream of the crop. Diedre Schreiber, daughter of Debi and Charlie Warnock, and Rylee Goller, daughter of Curtis Goller and Joe and Linda Estes, tried out for the honor last week. Schreiber is a member of this year’s Stock- growers Cattlemen of the Year family — the Warnocks. Her hobbies include showing cattle and horses. She is a member of FFA and 4-H and qual- ifi ed and showed her horse at the Oregon State Fair, received the Jidge Tippett Memorial Beef Award, the Wallowa County Stockgrowers Heifer Award. Additionally, Schreiber represented Wallowa County at the National Horse Classics Team in Kentucky. Rylee Goller is also a top horsewoman and excels in academic studies as well. She has always been involved in horse rid- ing, hiking and running with her extended fam- ily and enjoys weight-lifting, swimming and volleyball. Goller maintained a 4.0 GPA all the way through high school and was inducted into the National Honor Society as a freshman. She’s won scholastic awards in physical science, biol- ogy, English, and fi tness and conditioning. Additional accomplishments include cham- pion walk trot at Wallowa County Fair, cham- pion dressage Level A, reserve champion trail and champion barrel racing. FFA accomplishments include third in begin- ning advertisement, and fi rst and second as a member of the meat evaluation team. She hopes to become the valedictorian of her class in 2019 and plans to attend a four-year university focusing on pre-med, attending med- ical school and becoming a family practitioner thereafter.
