Born October 25, 1926 on Sutter Island (Courtland, California) to Darlene Willa Vernett Fox King and William Harold King, the oldest of three boys. The family moved to Sacramento, California where Merrill graduated from McClatchy High School in 1944. He was a Boy Scout, Sea Scout and was appointed corporal in ROTC. He married Charlotte Esther Reader in 1953, in Carson City NV, making their home in West Sacramento. Esther passed away in 1973. Merrill married Betty Jackson Hol- loran in Wallowa in 1974. They lived in West Sacramento and after retirement spent summers in Wallowa, Oregon. Betty passed away in 2012. Merrill always said he was blessed to have two wonderful women. His marriage to Esther gave him numerous in-laws and more than a score of nieces and nephews. With his marriage to Betty, he gained a son and two daughters, who blessed him with six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. All brought him great joy and they loved him immensely. Merrill began his career at Capital Tractor with heavy equipment in North Sacramento where his dad was foreman. Merrill was a gentle soul who was kind and thoughtful – and embodied the term gentleman. Throughout life, Merrill’s love was hunting and fishing - from hunting with his aunt in his youth to fishing with his grandchildren in his elder years. Families and friends fondest memories are hunting elk, deer, birds, and fishing with Merrill. He restored a vintage grader for Tiechert and often overhauled tractors, motors and machinery for friends. He enjoyed bowling, carpentry (building and restoring furniture) and was a collector. Merrill liked to bake (snickerdoodles) and can fresh produce to share with friends and was known for his famous Christmas cheese balls. Merrill was a member of the Elks, TERRA, Capital A’s and the Rusty Wheels. He enjoyed the gatherings with his fellow Tiechert retirees and also traveling in his model A with the car clubs.
