EAGLES BOUNCE BACK SPORTS CALENDAR By Scot Heisel O ne week after a bruising 64-6 loss to Powder Valley, the Joseph Eagles found their groove again and coasted to a 56-26 home victory of the Cove Leopards on Friday night. Joseph (3-3, 2-1) scored on each of its irst seven drives, which included ive rushing touchdowns from senior Cayden DeLury, another from senior Logan Welch and a 34-yard pass from DeLury to sophomore Kade Kilgore Cross Country Wallowa County @ Kyle Burnside Memo- rial Wildhorse Invite (Pendleton) that sent the Eagles into halftime with a commanding 34-6 lead. The Eagles defense was equally impressive, clogging up the Leopards rushing attack for most of the night and constantly pressuring Cove’s junior quarterback Bryson Stitzel. The defense also contributed points. With Cove backed up on its own 5-yard line, the Joseph line surged and forced a Stitzel fumble that was scooped up by sophomore Trey Wandschneider for an Eagles touchdown. Enterprise defeated league foe Elgin on Thursday for the second time in a week — this time emphatically and at home. Junior Riley Gray led the attack with 11 kills and senior setter Gwen Jenson amassed 24 assists, including 12 in the third game alone, as the Outlaws (7-11, 2-4) swept the Huskies 25-10, 25-21, 25-14. Enterprise enjoyed argu- ably its best performance of the season. The Outlaws con- sistently found their spots on defense, managed crucial digs and made solid contact on the attack. As a team, they com- mitted just four service errors the entire match. “I don’t think they realized how many mistakes we were making,” said coach Shi- ann Micka. “I brought them their stats one day and said, ‘This is what you’ve been doing.’ Their reaction was like, ‘What?’ Once I brought that to their attention, they realized they needed to play smarter and get better at the little things.” The improvement was ev- ident right away as the Out- laws jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead in the irst game be- hind a lurry of aces and kills. Enterprise closed the deal on With 1A district play looming on the hori- zon, the Joseph Eagles (16-4, 9-2) continued to build momentum last weekend with three more league victories, starting with a four- game win over visiting Cove (6-12, 4-7) on Friday. The Eagles had a solid chance to win a back-and-forth irst game against the Leop- ards, when senior Ally Cooney appeared to drive home the winning kill with Joseph up 24-22. Cove scrambled to make the save of the match, however, and held on for a 26-24 win. The temporary setback only seemed to spark the Eagles’ killer instinct, however. Scot Heisel/Chieftain Riley Gray drives the ball past an Elgin defender as teammate Ashley Exon watches Thursday. Game 1 behind effective ser- vice from sophomore Shelby Moncrief and a pair of strong kills by Gray. The only letdown for En- terprise came in the second game when the Huskies (2- 10, 0-6) chipped away at a ive-point deicit and got to within 17-15 on an ace from junior Taylor Noble. Enter- prise junior Reece Christman then took serve and got the Outlaws back on track with four straight points, one on an ace, two on kills from Gray and another on a kill by senior Tiffanie George, who inished with four kills, 10 digs and a pair of aces. The Huskies battled back to pull within 23-21, but ulti- mately lost the second game 25-21 on a service error. The third game was never really in doubt as Enterprise Personal | Business | Ag jumped out to a 10-3 lead. George took serve at 11-6 and the Outlaws reeled off six straight points. Senior outside hitter Sarah Aschenbrenner announced her presence with four kills in the span of 10 points. Junior Heidi Niezen in- ished with six kills and an assist for Enterprise, while junior Ashley Exon contrib- uted four kills, two aces and nine digs. The Outlaws also got 10 digs from Christman and seven each from Gray and Moncrief. Gray and Niezen had two blocks each to lead Enterprise. The Outlaws hit the road for a match at league-leading Grant Union on Saturday. (19- 3, 4-0). The Prospectors (21- 3, 6-0), ranked No. 3 in the state, swept Enterprise 25-16, 25-15, 25-15. PREP ROUNDUP Cougars win 3 matches Wallowa County Chieftain Keep an eye on those Cougars. The Wallowa volleyball team went into the weekend with just one league victo- ry on the season, but swept three home league matches Friday and Saturday to im- prove to 4-6 in the Old Ore- gon League Standings. The Cougars opened the weekend with a convincing 25-17, 25-21, 25-10 win over Pine Eagle on Friday. Against Griswold in the irst of two Saturday match- es, Wallowa took a close irst game 26-24 and cruised to a 25-11 win in the second game. They fell 24-26 in the third game — the only one they lost all weekend — be- fore clinching the match, 25- 21 in the fourth. In Saturday’s late match, Wallowa swept Nixyaawii 25-12, 25-10, 25-6. The Cougars will wrap up the regular season with four matches in three days — against Echo at home at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by road games at Cove on Friday and at Nixyaawii and Griswold on Saturday. Football: Another loss for Wallowa Travis Haga rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries and tossed a pair of touchdown pass- es, but the Cougars (1-5, 0-3) came up just short in a 30-28 home loss against league-leading Pine Eagle (4-2, 3-0) on Friday night.
