Wallowa County Chieftain Community wallowa.com December 16, 2015 A9 750 sacks of candy in Joseph OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 16, 1915 • Now that the fair and show season is over, Sam Wade and son have gathered together the many premiums they have won this year with their Per- cheron horses, and it is a large and highly creditable display… this is a total of 41 premiums, the majority being for the highly coveted championships and ¿rsts. 7he record is one of which Mr. Wade and son Harry may be proud and the county shares in their grati¿cation. • Among the many letters to Santa Claus written by chil- dren of the community, this one from Nova Simmons, Imnaha, was received by the Record Chieftain. It comes from the heart and tells of the longings of the child: Dear Santa Claus: I would like to have a little toy broom and a set of dishes. Please fetch Johnny a rubber doll that will holler. Goodbye to Santa Claus. Nova Simmons” • Joseph will provide the most striking Christmas cele- bration in the county this year. 7he whole town will unite in a community Christmas tree, to be set up on one of the Main street corners, It will be loaded with gifts for children, about 750 sacks of candy being one of the important items. A cho- rus of 50 or more voices will give several musical numbers, it is expected. 70 YEARS AGO December 20, 1945 • It was only eleven below ]ero 7uesday morning, the coldest recorded so far this fall. 7emperatures below ]ero had been recorded only two or three days previously this season. • An effort was being made the past week to raise about $1500 to repair and improve the Methodist church in Jo- seph. Contributions approx- imating this sum were made within a few hours after sub- scription lists were taken out. • Cpl. Alvia Jack Pickle, who has been in the Italian theater of war, is home. He ar- rived on the bus last 7hursday evening and before his par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Al Pickle, and sisters and brothers had a chance to get a good look at him, the lights went out and were off for about 2 hours. However, Jack as well as the rest of them, had been through blackouts before. He has been away about two years. 50 YEARS AGO December 16, 1965 • On November 15 at Plei- ku, South Vietnam, Captain Richard Shortridge of Jo- seph, received the Vietnam- ese Cross for Gallantry with a Gold Star. 7he medal was awarded for his part in the Battle of Plei Me on Octo- ber 22. It is the second high- est Vietnamese medal and is comparable to the Silver Star given by the U.S. • A need for 54 Christmas baskets to be sent to needy Chieftain archives Festivities of a Christmas past. On reaching 600 days the crew and their wives were treated to a dinner, and upon attaining the 800 days the crew and their wives were treated to a dinner and a gift (an electric carving knife) was given to each of the ladies. 25 YEARS AGO December 20, 1990 • 7he Wallowa Improve- ment Committee received word recently that it is the winner of a national award for making the city bloom in an ongoing project that got underway in the spring of 1988. Hubert Crow, chairman of the committee¶s beauti¿ca- tion project, was noti¿ed that Wallowa is the winner of one of only two 1990 Lady Bird Johnson Awards in the coun- try. • Enterprise resident Ger- ald Perren was invited to ad- dress Governor-elect Barba- ra Roberts’ natural resource transition team this week in Pendleton. 7he task force will formulate a roster of primary natural resource problems that are impeding economic stabil- ity in Oregon. • Photo caption: Gift hold- ers in the form of reindeer take shape in Larry Wishart’s junior high school art class at Enterprise.
