While the exact distance Is not known, experts placed the fence at about 325 feet from home plate. The long and high hit balls however had the treat of a strong tail wind. Pendleton won Uie eastern divi sion of the Intermountain Confer ence with eight wins and no loss es. They now have a 31 and I rec ord for the season. Losses wer to Walla Walla, Pasco and Prine' ville Friday afternoon. The Crook County Cowboys end' ed the season with an 18-4 record which Included one loss to Bend. Prineville supported a 11-1 record for the western subdivision play. The champion Bucks thus played about 10 more games than Prine ville and this showed up 111 th games Saturday. Pendleton, winner of th Tnter- mountain conference champion' ship, will now host North Salem, champion of Uie 8 A-l race, in th quarter-finals of Uie Oregon Class A-l championships May 25 at Pen dleton. The semi-final round is sched uled for May 28, with Uie final to be held June 2 at Multnomah Sta dium in Portland as the windup of a triplcheader. The first two will be games between schools from Class B and A-2 champion ships. FIRST GAME Jerry Zinn, Prineville Junior catcher, hurt his hand on a foul tip on the second batter up which indirectly set up the first score of the game for the Bucks. Tim Tem ple, Uie center fielder for the Bucks, got on with a walk. He stole second with such good luck that he also took third on a dou ble steal as Jim Chrlstensen, Uie big Pendleton catcher, stole sec ond after getting on with a walk. Both times Zinn, who could not bend his forefinger, got off bad throws. Temple scored on pass ed ball. Prineville looked good at bat in Uie first Inning as Mike Barrow got on with a single and Uie sec ond man up, Brian Pope, hit a triple that scored Barrow easily. Orioles sign Robin Roberts CLEVELAND. Ohio (UPI) The Baltimore Orioles today an nounced Uie signing of Robin Roberts and named him as til starter In Tuesday night's game with Uie Cleveland Indians. Roberts, former National League pitching ace who won 234 games in 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, had bees a freo ngent since his release earlier Uiis season by the New York Yankees. Oriole manager Billy Hitchcock said left-hander Art Quirk would bo opUoned to the Rochester farm club in Uie International League to make room for Roberts. Roberts, 35, worked out in Bal timore about a month ago and impressed Hitchcock with a new change-of pace pitch he has de veloped. "We are signing Roberts be cause we believe he can still b effective," Hitchcock said. "H has to improve our pitching staff becauso now he la better t h a a Quirk. "Roberts showed me he can still throw hard. H teems to have developed a pretty good change of pace which he didn't have before." Prineville Palls to Score Prineville picked up four hits in the second but could not push anyone across. Pendleton went to work in Uie top of Uie third when Tim Temple got on with an error by Brian Pope. The next man up, Chris tensen, hit a long double to score Temple. Big gun Bunker hit his first homer Uiat scored Christen' sen. Prineville picked up two hits in th third but no scores. The fourth inning went nowhere for Pendleton, but they stopped messing around in the top of the fifth as the second man up. Lap ry French, hit a triple. The next up, Mike Shirley, hit a single that scored French. Shirley stole second. Jack Baird, tho pint-sized third Backer for the Bucks, clobbered another homer. Baird really got the "old back slapping" from his team mates as he doesn't look big enough to hit It past the pitcher. Pope of Prineville hit a triple to cheer the spirits of Uie Cow boy lovers, but it wont for nought as the other three men up went down fast. Tim Temple picked up a single and on cue stole second. Tony Svetich, Uie Pendleton pitcher, knocked out a single to advance Temple to Uiird. Both scored when Bunker put one into orbit that hit In the second row of cars over the left field fence. Prineville tried to come back but could only get Westbrook to third on a tingle, an error on the first baseman and a passed ball. Thus Pendleton made up for Friday's defeat with a 12-1 win. SECOND GAME Pendleton started th second gam off with a bang as they sent 11 men to Uie plate in Uie first Inning and collected six runs on five hits. Cook mov ed to second on a single by Tem ple. With Tempi on first and Cook on third, Chrlstensen hit four straight fouls with Temple break ing for second on each pitch. Ft nally Chrlstensen connected on i hard hit ball toward the third sacker, Brian Pope. Pop fielded the ball but had to wait for Bar row to move toward second for Uie start of a double play. Rhubarb Starts Meanwhile Temple of Pendle ton had broken with the pitch and was well on (he way to sec ond. He hit the bag just before the throw and he and Uie bag went sliding off togeUier. Barrow, Uie second baseman, stepped back' ward to touch second and throw to first for Uie double. However Uie bag was no longer there and Vince Genna called the runner safe. This started a rhubarb with Uie end result of Pope, Uie third sacker of Prineville, leaving the game. Isaacson replaced Pop in Uie lineup for Prineville. Cook had scored on the hit by Chrlstensen. Temple was now On second and Chrlstensen on first. Svetich, who pitched the first game for the Bucks, hit a triple which scored Temple and Chrls tensen, French hit a triple and was scored on a hit by Shirley. Baker ready for big year CORVALLIS (UPI) - Terry Baker Is ready for another foot ball season. He proved It Saturday by lead ing the Oregon State varsity to a 14-8 victory over th Beavers alumni In their annual spring con test. The win was the third for the varsity in four annual garnet. Baker, the classy quarterback who Is heading Into his senior year at Oregon State, combined with end Vera Burke on a 35-yard pass play for the Beavers' first touchdown In the opening period The varsity built Its lead to 14-0 at halftime In the second period on a two-yard touchdown plunge by Steve Moo. The alumni got Its score In the final period on a 24-yard run by tackle Clark Cubbage after he re covered a fumble. (UPI) -A million dollars worth of sleek racing machines, Uie fastest 33 In history, were set today to battle fr- fam and fortun In the 46th annual SOO-mlle Speedway classic on Memorial Day. Four dayt of speed trials wound up Sunday on the usual frenetic note with 10 racers on Uie apron ready to be qualified when time ran out. The field average of 147. 330 miles per hour Is more than two miles faster than last year's record. Thus, qualifications ended as they started May 12 with rec ords. Parnelll Jones set Uie pace on opening day when he became Uie first Speedway driver to shatter Uie 150 miles-per-hour mark to win the pole position. Although his effort was not equalled or surpassed, Uie total field av erage was considerably better than m 1961. Heat Bothers Drivers It probably would have been even faster but for Uie heat wave which last Saturday soared to a record 141 degrees on Uie track surface and hit 130 Sunday. When Uie trials were finished, the overall picture also included: Four "500" winners made the grade defending champion A. J. Foyt, Houston, Tex.; Rodger Ward, Indianapolis; Jim Rath mann, Melbourne, Fla., and Troy Ruttman, Dearborn, Mich. Five rookies crashed through Jim McElreath, Arlington, Texas; Dan Gurncy, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Chuck Hulse, Downey, Calif.; Chuck Rodee, Indianapolis, and Allen Crowe, Springfield, 111. Four cars were "bumped" by faster machines on Uie final day. That left Dempsey Wilson, Lawn dale, Calif.; Duane Carter, Indi anapolis, and rookies Ronnie Duman, Dearborn, Mich., and Bruce Jacobl, Salem, Ind., with out rides. Jones, at a clip of 159.370 m.p.h., was the fastest qualifier. Elmer George, Indianapolis, son-ln-law of speedway owner Tony Hulman, was Uie slowest at 146. 092.
