2 The Bend Bulletin, Wednesday, August 21, 1957 fewest Medical Center Shears Completion Modern Frame is Employed The city's newest medical cen ter, is rapidly taking shape at East Fourth and Greenwood. Builders hope to have the struc ture completed about the middle of next month. The new clinic will be known as the Bend Memorial Clinic. Associated in the venture are seven physicians who presently comprise the staff of the Robert Hemingway Memorial Clinic. They are: Dr. C. J. Rademacher, Dr. Lorance B. Evers, Dr. Robert L. Cutter, Dr. Bradford N. Pease, Dr. Richard C. Robinson, Dr. E. A. Moody and Dr. Richard H. Ettlns er. Manager of the clinic will be William G. Ellis, who recently re signed as Personnel officer for the State Department of Motor Ve hicles to take the position here. Ellis formerly managed a clinic ' at Juneau, Alaska. Designed by Paul Ilnydon Kirk and Associates, Seattle architect- ural firm, the building Is of mod ern frame construction and fronted with slate grey native rock. The exterior sides and rear are being finished In cedar with a redwood stain. 'Occupying a corner lot measur ing 140 by 150 feet, the clinic will havo parking space along the east side for 26 cars. Additional park ing for members of the staff is be ing provided at the rear. Spacious Waiting Rooms Patients at the new center will find spacious waiting accommoda 'ttons. In addition to a 48 by 16 foot main reception room, a small er room is being provided for children. Plans also include a wall ed outside playground area open ing off the children's reception room. . A unique touch in the reception room will be added by a well to be filled with plants and capped by a translucent plastic "double bubble" skylight. Individual suites are being pro vided for the doctors with each one having two examining rooms and a consultation room. Special rooms will include one sound-proofed for hearing tests and a room designed for refracting In eye examinations. Plans have also been made for Inclusion of a pharmacy in a 20 by 20 foot area near the entrance, It will be operated under a lease arrangement by Bud Rose, who reports that he will handle pre scriptions and sick room sup plies. Rose has been associated with Brandls-Thrlft-Wlse Drug store as a phnrmacist for the past four years. The pharmacy will be called Rose pharmacy. Frosh Air At All Tillies Tile new building will be heated by a forced air oil furnace. For the summer months a carrier re frigeration system will assure cool air throughout the building and at all times a continuous changing of air will be in operation. An inter-office phone system Is also being installed with a central switchboard to be located adja cent to the reception room. The 95 by 84 foot clinic Is being built by the Lurie Construction Co., Seattle. It was planned and fi nanced by a subsidiary organiza tion, Western Medical Centers, Inc., which has similar clinic buildings in nine western states. The doctors who are associated in the Clinic will lease the properties from the Soultle firm. Ed Booker has been In charge of construction. Ho reports that sub-contracts were let to local per sons and that in most cases local trademen were used in construc tion work. Including the doctors, the staff Fifteen or 16 years ago less than one third of the farmhouses In Des chutes county were lighted by elec tricity. Now there are only about 50 of the 1,067 or more that use other forms of illumination. Metolius means "white fish," ac cording tc the Warm Springs In dians. The town was named for the river which bubbles forth from giant springs near Black Butte and cuts Its way into the Deschutes not far from the community. of the clinic will be comprised of about 20 persons. ' j Grass is one of the most Impor- tant natural resources in Central j Oregon. Many thousands of ecres of arid land has little if any eco nomic value other than the grazing it provides for beef cattle and sheep. Even in the higher moun-, famous regions grass is an im-; portent supplement to the timber harvested there. In the lower lev els where irrigation has vastly im proved the productivity of the land many farmers find more profit from raising grass than row crops ! or grain. Grass itself has little value other than as a feed for livestock. Live stock, because of the abundance of grass in Crook, Jefferson and Deschutes counties has been a ma jor source of income. In earlier years sheep were the- most im portant livestock - raised. During World War II sheepmen found it almost impossible to get herders for their flocks.' Substitutes took over muchjf the wool market and with the increased demand for beef for Army rations many sheepmen sold their flocks and started rais ing beef cattle. Since 1940 beef cow numbers, in Crook, Jefferson and Deschutes counties have gone up from 16,000 to nearly 50.000 in 1956.
