Roosevelt was what the Broadway crowd would call a fast man with a buck. That means he was a big spender. FDR's fa', peacetime spending programs ol $7 or $8 billion and thereabouts, in a single year pan icked the financial community. President Harry S. Trtimar. came along after'that and set tew spending records. And, now, Pres 'dent Eisenhower Is spending at p peacetime rate which makes FDR and HST took like pikers. On the basis of estimates for the current fiscal year, the Eisen hower administration will have a four-year spending total of $267.f billion. That Is for Mr. Eisenhow er's first term. He has begun hi? second with budget estimates for continued big spending: in fact record peacetime spending. FDR served three full termr and spent in each of them, re spectivelv, $29 billion, 37 billior and $306 billion. Mr. Roosevelt'r $306 billion tops Mr. Eisenhower'? first term expenditure, but FDR r spending was largely for Worii' War II. Mr. Roosevelt was in tlr red every year during his pres: dency. HST Also Had' Deficits Mr. Truman spent $172 billion in the four-year term lie inheriter1 on FDR's death in April, 1945 HST was in the red more offer than not. World War II spendinp was being tapered off then, but not much. II Mr. Ei senhower's spending record is shadowed a bit by FDR's World War II spending, the present ad ministration has a clear spending lead over Mr. Truman While he was spending that $267.9 billion, Mr. Eisenhower was a busy tax ' collector.' Come next June 30, which is the end of th. current fiscal year, and Mr. Ei senhower will have collected ap proximately $263 billion, an enor mous sum of money which is not much under the tax take of all three Roosevelt administrations put together. The 12-year Roose velt take was more than $300 billion. Mr. Truman collected taxes with a hpavier hand. His eight- vear take was more than $395 hil 'ion. Mr. Eisenhower will run his tax take up to about $526 billion in eight years unless he reduces government costs sufficiently to make tax reductions feasible. Complaints From Humphrey Secretary of Treasury George M. Humphrey is beginning to grumble where he can be over heard that taxes and government costs must be reduced or else. The or else, Humphrey believes, would be a devastating depres sion. Mr. Eisenhower has a quick ear for the advice of his secre tary of treasury, so maybe tax cuts are coming sometime, but not soon. The spending figures put Mr Eisenhower right up there vith the New Dealers and Fair Deal ers as a soender of -other peoples' money. There is, however, a dif ference. Mr. Eisenhower is ni New Dealer on government defi cits. He does not like to spend borrowed money and he has put considerable effort into balancing the federal budget. It is balanced now. Mr. Eisenhower has learned the hard wnv what others had to learn before him: That cutting government expenses is next to impossible. Few but the old tim ers around town will recall tha Franklin D. Roosevelt made gov ernment economy a big issue in his first presidential campaign He was going to reduce govern ment expenses by 25 per cent, but he never was able to make good on that. He decided, instead, to soend the country out of deores sion. That did not work, either. THE NOSE KNOWS NEWARK. N.J. Ike Picks Bible Verse From Psalms WASHINGTON (UP) President Eisenhower selected verse 12 of the 33rd chapter of Psalms as the Biblical passage on which to rest his hand in taking his oath for a second term. It reads: "Blessed is the nation whose god is the Lord; and the people whom He had chosen from His own inheritance." Vice President Richard M. Nix on selected the fourth verse of the second chapter of Isaiah, which reads: "And He shall judge among the nations: and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." The President used a Bible given to him by his late mjother when he was graduated from the UiS. Military Academy In West Point in 1915. Nixon used a Bible that belonged originally to his great, great grandparents, William and Martha Milhous. The Bible was a King James Version printed in 1829. DANCE PLANNED SpechU to The Bulletin LAPINE The LaPine Home Extension Club will sponsor a March of Dimes dance January 26 at the community hall. Club chair man, Mrs. Jack ' Taylor, is in charge. MOST EXTRAORDINARY LONDON (UP) The Sunday Express reported Sunday railway officials in two cars drove 200 miles to arrange for Queen Eliza beth II to travel 103 miles by train instead of by car in order to save rationed gasoline. Madras Council, PGE Set Meet Special to The Bulletin MADRAS The Madras city council is making plans for a Feb ruary 7 meeting with officials of Portland GeneVal Electric com pany to discuss the possibility of saving Round Butte springs. The meeting, scheduled for 7:30 in the city hall, will also be attended by Jim Howland, engineer with the Corvallis engineering firm of Cor nell, Howland, Hayes and Marry ficld, which has been retained by the city of Madras. The Round Butte springs site will be inundated by the waters back ed up by Pelton dam when it is completed. The city of Madras has a water right to the springs. Studies by the Corvallis engi neering firm show that it will cast the city $50,000 more in capital outlay to pump water from the Deschutes river for domestic use than it would take from Round Bute springs' and also that, based on an eventual population of 3500 persons, it would co-it 8.5 a thou sand gallons more to pump the wa ter from the river. Holds Session Sn-rlnl to The Bulletin TUMALO The Tumalo Home Extension Unit met at the home of Mrs. Fred Samples last week. During the business meeting, one name was submitted for a county committee member. February 8 was announced as the first meet ing of the clothing workshop to be held at the Home of Mrs. Lloyd Parkiurst. Final plans were made for starting the traveling basket. Lunch was then served by Mrs. Samples, Mrs. Neil Davis, Mrs. Harvey Stephen, and Mrs. T. G. Larson.
