T FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21 ,1952 THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON PAGE THREE ' AJ,I.. D.k f vveeKiy Damme Sheet Compares Good, NNews By I'HIL NEWSOM (United Pretw l-'ureluu Ncwo Editor) The week's balance sheet be tween the good and bad news in the hot and cold wars; THE GOOD 1. Field Marshal Alexander Pa pagos, scourge of Communists and staunch friend of the United .Stales won an overwhelming vic tory in Greece's third iftitional election in three years. It remain ed to be seen whether Papagos could put steel into the tottering Greek economy as ho had put steel into the Greek army. In any event the Greeks had their best chance for a strong central gov ernment since the end of World War II. For the West it meant that three of the toughest armies in Europe Yugoslav, Greek and Turkish would man the south em wall against Russian aggres sion. 2. Britons had the assurances of their chancellor of the ex chequer, R. A. Butler, that the nation no longer was in danger of "bleeding to death" from loss of gold and dollars. Britain, heart and banker of the vast sterling area, earned $82,000,000 more in October than it spent. It was not the end of an economic battle which has included some $3,000, 000,000 in . American aid, but' It was a "breathing space." 3. A 'strong French force, in cluding paratroopers, struck deep into rebel territory above Hanoi m Indo-China, along the Viet Minn lifeline from Red China. The attackers withdrew after destroying supply dumps which are more important to the Reds than manpower. It signified grow ing French strength and meant that, for now at least, Hanoi was safe. ' THE BAD 1. A deadlock within a deadlock was developing on the Korean truce issue. An Indian proposal to the United Nations which sought to meet objections of both sides on the exchange of war prison ers, met immediate U. S. oppo sition. The Russians also were re ported cool, as was Peiping. How ever, many of our Western Allies were urging careful study of the Indian plan which held out the hope for an early cease-fire while a neutral commission argued how and under what circumstances war prisoners should be released. 2. Hopes for the early unifi : cation of Western Europe were deteriorating steadily. Opposition was growing both in France and West Germany, keys to' any plau, to join Europe economically, po litically or militarily.' IryGermany Chancellor Konrad Adenauer suf ! fered one of the worst defeats of Ills political career when the Bundestag turned down his mo tion for passage of the German peace treaty and the European army plan. In France, opposition . was coming from both Socialists i and De Gaullists. ! 3. Increased efforts to set up r an Eastern Mediterranean de i fense command reflected fears r held particularly in Turkey that Iran now would go Communist I sooner rather than later, not only vastly extending' Turkey's fron I tier with the Reds but endanger ing the whole Mid-Eastern oil setup- There also was a British con viction that British troops even tually would have to leave Suez and that tne island ot uypress would become the nerve center of Mid-Eastern defenses. Chamber Planning Meeting Nov. 25 1 PRINEVILLE, Nov. 21 The November meeting of the Central Oregon Chamber of Commerce will be held Tuesday night, Nov. 25. in Redmond, with the area's I power shortage expected to be the i principal topic of discussion. ! It is also expected that members l of the Madras and other delega S tion will urge renewed hacking i for the Portland General Electric ! Company's plan to construct a i multi-million dollar power gener ating dam at the Helton site, in the Deschutes gorge. Howard W. Turner, Madras, is president of the region chamber. You are not alone. j ; There definitely Is a shortage ot men, an American Medical Asso ciation Journal editorial said Fri day. And the situation will get worse. . The Journal said if it had not been for the war deaths in World War II the present . excess of American women over men would be about one-third of a million less. Other factors" contributing to the scarcity of men, the editorial said, is the high death rate in males, and the entrance of more female immigrants into this coun. try. But because of continuing war deaths, "the present Indications are that this excess will become even larger In the future,'1 the AM A editorial predicted. The 1950 census showed there were 1,430,000 more women than men In the United States. The greatest difference occurs In the age groups over 45 years, where' women outnumber men 1,000 to 956, the Journal said. BOYS AND GIRLS! TOMORROW!
