THE GOOD
1. Field Marshal Alexander Pa

nation no longer was in danger
of "bleeding to death" from loss
of gold and dollars. Britain, heart

area, earned $82,000,000 more in
October than it spent. It was not
the end of an economic battle
which has included some $3,000,
000,000 in . American aid, but' It
was a "breathing space."
3. A 'strong French force, in
cluding paratroopers, struck deep
into rebel territory above Hanoi

The attackers withdrew after
destroying supply dumps which

' THE BAD
1. A deadlock within a deadlock

the United Nations which sought
to meet objections of both sides
on the exchange of war prison
ers, met immediate U. S. oppo
sition. The Russians also were re
ported cool, as was Peiping. How
ever, many of our Western Allies
were urging careful study of the
Indian plan which held out the
hope for an early cease-fire while
a neutral commission argued how

war prisoners should be released.
2. Hopes for the early unifi
: cation of Western Europe were
deteriorating steadily. Opposition
was growing both in France and

GRIM REUNION David Feiler Is reunited with sons Daniel, 13,
and Barry, 9, in their Bronx, New York, home, where the boys
returned two days after fleeing when Daniel fatally shot his sister,
Marlon, 11, in a playful "threat" with his father's rifle. Daniel
was paroled in custody of Ms parents after being found "a delin
quent" in Children's Court.

TWO RUNS MADE
The Bend fire department made
two runs Thursday eveiiing'-'to'
check on flue fires. There was no
damage in either case. At 6:02 p.
m., crew members went to the
Bert Palmer home, 44 Park place.
At 8:24 p. m., they were called to
the warehouse of Eastern Oregon
Mills.

men, an American Medical Asso
ciation Journal editorial said Fri
day. And the situation will get
worse. .
The Journal said if it had not
been for the war deaths in World
War II the present . excess of
American women over men would
be about one-third of a million
less.
Other factors" contributing to
the scarcity of men, the editorial
said, is the high death rate in
males, and the entrance of more
female immigrants into this coun.
