Deadline for receipt of tag ap plications is 5 p.m., October 6. A drawing will bo held Octobei 10 if more than 250 applications are received. . Elk winter range in the Stark ey area is in critical condition and the concentrated animals made heavy use , of grazing lands ' last spring, states Bob Mace, chief of big game for the game commission. ' Plan Deer Harvest On October 18 and 19 hunters with special tags will have an opportunity to harvest 1,500 ant- lerless deer from the interstate deer herd. This herd summers on the Fremont national forest west of Lakeview and winters on the Modoc national forest In northern California. Tag applications for tnis hunt win be accepted until 5 p.m., September 15. If more than 1,500 applications are re ceived, a drawing will be held September 19. A harvest of 3,000 antlerless deer from the herd was recom mended by the interstate deer herd committee; half the deer to be taken by Oregon hunters and the otner 1,500 by California hunters. The committee adminis ters a cooperative study by Cali fornia, Oregon and the U. S. forest service. Winter range car rying capacity determines the number of animals to be taken Jointly each year by Oregon and t,aiuornia. Tag fees for the two special, iig game hunts are $5.
