' Plan Deer Harvest
On October 18 and 19 hunters
with special tags will have an
opportunity to harvest 1,500 ant-
lerless deer from the interstate
deer herd. This herd summers on
the Fremont national forest west
of Lakeview and winters on the
Modoc national forest In northern
California. Tag applications for
tnis hunt win be accepted until
5 p.m., September 15. If more
than 1,500 applications are re
ceived, a drawing will be held
September 19.
A harvest of 3,000 antlerless
deer from the herd was recom
mended by the interstate deer
herd committee; half the deer to
be taken by Oregon hunters and
the otner 1,500 by California
hunters. The committee adminis
ters a cooperative study by Cali
fornia, Oregon and the U. S.
forest service. Winter range car
rying capacity determines the
number of animals to be taken
Jointly each year by Oregon and
t,aiuornia.
Tag fees for the two special,
iig game hunts are $5. Anlicants
should not submit the fee until
notified by the game commission

partridge's flight is strong and
swift, but it will usually He
after one good flight. The chukar
runs and flushes at long dis
tances. .
On the domestic side, the male
chukar is said to take but one
mate. Most game birds are po
lygamous, in Its native habitat,
the ehukar partridge Is found
from Mongolia to the Himalaya
mountains and south to -Nepal,

Administration leaders were
confident of giving President
Truman the power he wants
without "crippling" communist-
curbing riders.
Voting on more than 60 amend
ments began at 1 p.m. EDT. The
less controversial amendments
began at 1 p.m. The loss contro
versial amendments came first,
and the senators whipped'threkiKh
them at a brisk clip,
The Important - changes were
held for the later rounds when
turbulent floor fights would
build up. Democratic . leader
Scott W. Lucas promised . to
hold the senate In a long night
session If necessury to finish the
bill.
' Democratic senators were con
fident of defeating un attempt
by Sen. Karl E. Mundt, P.., S.D.,
to tack the Mundt-Ferguson com
munist control bill onto the econ
omic controls measure.,
Mundt had offered to drop his
fight If the administration would
promises to bring it up later. The
democratic leaders brushed him
off, saying merely they would
give the senate a chance some
time later to vote on some form

takes all lt needed for defense
through allocation authority.
They said it would hamper
"black marketing" by keeping
goods In normal channels.
Another, Sen. Ldwln c. John
son, D., Colo., would let the gov-1
ernment expand any federally
owned Industrial plants for de
fense. Another amendment by Wher
ry would let the government
compromise the amount of dam
ages to be paid by violators who
overcharge under price ceilings.
