Quality of eggs and the manner in which they are cared for, pack et! and shipped, has a direct bear ing on hatchability and an indi rect affect on fertility, the special ist points out. Good management includes egg gathering five to six times daily. After immediate cleaning, grad ing and checkingTor cracks, eggs should be cooled and stored at a temperature from 40 to 65 de grees in a room with a relative humidity of 90 per cent. Eggs Classified Many eggs that are classified as infertile, Bennion points out, are merely the result of improper care. Many were fertile, but the e m b y r o died at" an early age. There Is a slight reduction in hatchability, he adds, where eggs are held longer than seven days. After 14 days in storage, the hatchability reduction increases rapidly. Turkey eggs held more than one week require turning once daily. Bennion states that eggs weigh ing between 32 and 38 ounces per dozen will hatch better than ex tremely large- or small eggs. Loose or tremulous air cells will also reduce hatchability. He adds that clean eggs will hatch about 10 per cent better than will dirty eggs. Eggs laid in a nest, meanwhile, average from 10 to 15 per cent better hatchability than eggs laid in the open. Some Eggs Explode Bacterial contamination which frequently results in eggs explod ing in the incubator is generally most serious where soiled- or washed eggs are used. Explosions of this type may result in con tamination of other eggs in the in cubator, and the organism that causes contamination may live through the ordinary cleaning fu migation, Bennion adds. Breeding flocks which are fre quently moved or rotated on sod pastures and limited to about 500 birds per flock produce the clean est eggs with resulting better fertility and hatchability. Pittsburgh Gets , Fancy Buildings Pittsburgh IPI The once-smoky city of Pittsburgh is leading the world in construction of new and dramatic office buildings, accord ing to W. K. Harrison, American architect. Harrison, here to display scale models of his new Aluminum Company of America building, said a new American form of architecture Is supplanting the old stone and mortar methods. He pointed to two other Harrison-designed structures to em phasize his point. The Mellon-U. S. Steel building here and the United Nations building in New York both depend upon sturdy, light metals rather than the bulky materials of the past. The aluminum exterior of the Alcoa building and the stainless steel outer surface of the Mellon-U. S. Steel building, he said, permit construction of interior walls much thinner than in the past. The Alcoa building will be set back about 20 feet from the street and the resultant plaza will be landscaped, Harrison said. While the plaza will permit more sun light to fall on the building, green-tinted windows will protect personnel from the sun's rays. Management of the record de partment in the Ries radio shop on Franklin avenue, yesterday was taken over by Stanley Han sen, former Portland resident, it was announced today. - Operation of the shop's radio department will continue under the management of A. A. Ries. Hansen was choir director and organist for a number of church es in Portland. Prior to coming to Bend he was organist at St. Mary's cathedral in Portland. He also was accompanist for the Portland Ad club gleemen. In conjunction with the opera tion of the record shop Hansen plans to carry lines of pianos and electronic organs. He stated that he will have a Connsonata organ on display at the shop next week. Piano lines he Is considering carrying include Mason-Hamlin and Winters. Stocks Display Firmer Tone New York, Feb. 21 !P Stocks developed a firm tone in the late trading today after an early de cline had lowered the industrial and rail averages a few cents. Leaders came back from their lows without developing any in crease in volume. Meantime, trad ers continued to concentrate on special issues and special groups. Steels were sustained by re sumption of ' dividends on Cru cible Steel preferred. Dividend re sumption sent Newport Indus tries up substantially. Higher earnings helped Admiral Corp. advance. Du Pont made a new high on its dividend. Skelly broke nearly 3 points when directors an nounced they were studying a 100 per .cent stock dividend and then rallied sharply. National Steel ran up to a new high at 102 V4. up 2 points, and then met profit-taking which re duced the gain. The company di rectors proposed a three-for-one stock solit and Vaised the divi dend. Aircrafts continued to re spond to outlook for higher earn ings. Douglas made a new high. Auto issues met some support late in the session. American Power new stock fea tured in turnover and equaled its high before meeting realizing that brought a small loss. Other utilities ruled, firm in moderate trading. FORMER RESIDENT DIES Funeral services for Mrs. Te resa Mallory, 39, a former Bend resident, who died February 18, are to be held in Ridgewood. N.J., according to word received here today.
