Newspaper Page TextPAGE EIGHT Kennedy Back In Form; Giants Are Victorious New York, May 21 IP After three long years, Montla Kennedy of the Giants has overcome' the frightening experience of beaning a batter, and with all of' his old confidence restored, he may be come the club's best lefthander since the days of King Carl Hub bell. There's a pitcher's side, too, in nil of this current furore over beaning of batters, as Kennedy can well attest. It was on a sultry Saturday in the Polo grounds on May , lH4b, when Kennedy, then a sparkling rookie, who had won his first two starts, was pitching a one-hitter against the Braves. In the sixth inning he accidentally beaned Johnny Hopp, now with the Dodg ers, and although Hopp was not injured, Kennedy never torgot that moment. He walked the next three batters and was taken out and although he was credited with the victory he wasn't the same thereafter. Afraid to Throw 'Tor months I was actually afraid to throw hard for fear one of my pitches might take off and hit a batter In the head," he said. "Then my arm began to bother me and so I just couldn't make It until this season.' The records bear him out. In the rest of the 1946 season he was knocked out of the box 16 times, losing nine games and win nlng but four. Werlo Win ' BM Werle, the Pittsburgh Pi rates' red-hot rookie southpaw, chalked up his third win in . a night game at Pittsburgh by beat ing the Boston Braves, 2 to 1. Werle gave up 10 hits but received fine support, especially in' the ninth when the Braves loaded the bases with none out and failed to score.' ".' ' ; At St. .Louis, the Cardinals end ed a three-game losing streak by whipping the Dodgers, 6 to 2, un der the lights; , ' ' 'In the American league,-Sid Hudson gained his second win for the Senators by trimming the Browns, 5 to 3, in a night game. Eddie JooRt scored both of the Athletics' runs in a night game at Philadelphia as his team beat the Detroit Tigers. 2 to 1. in 10 innings. Joost nabbed the first' on a homer in the first inning. In the 10th he tallied on Ferris Faln's single to give Pitcher Joe Cole man his fifth win against three losses. Philadelphia at Chicago in the National and Chicago at New York and Cleveland at Boston In the American were postponed be cause of rain. Big Nine Admits Michigan State. Chicago, May 21 Hl'i Admission of Michigan State college to the western confernce swelled the Big Nine to Its former status of the Big Ten today, with the new member eligible to compete In all sports except football in the aca domic year 1950-1951. Final action on the membership vpplicatlon of the Spartans, who achieved football prominence last season, came yesterday at a con ference of faculty representatives of the conference. Williams Solons, Angels San Francisco, May 21 UP The Los Angeles rain, which gave the Angels and the Sacramento Solons three extra days of rest, apparently did more for the pitchers than it did for the bat ters. , Last night the Solons and An gels finally got back on the ball diamond and It took only three runs to win each game of their doubleheader. In the first game veteran right hander Frankie Dasso pitched a slick two-hitter to win 3 0 and ieach team got on ly six hits in the nine-inning nightcap, the Angels triumphing 3-2. Seattle edged Hollywood 7-6 and the San Francisco Seals pun ished the San Diego Padre 13-13 in the only two other games in the, loop. Oakland and Portland watched it rain. Eight; Men Fanned Dasso, who led the league in strikeouts when he was young er, fanned eight ' in the first game at Los Angeles. He walked only one, gave up two singles and notched his sixth win of the campaign. Not an Angel- got to second base during ,the seven in Ing contest. . In the second game Red Lynn held the! Solons to six hits, the same number the Angels got from Don Johnson and Glenn Llerman. ' In Seattle Guy Fletcher racked up win number nine, but it was a staggering Job. Bollywood closed the game with three-run rally in the last inning that fell a single tally short. Pinky. Woods was the victim. San Francisco s Steve Nagy got more runs than he is accustom ed to in his battle with San Di ego and had little trouble. Neb., May 21 Ul'i Big Seven representatives had high praise for Oklahoma A, and M. today but turned down lis bid for conference membership as "neith er feasible nor practical.'' The faculty representatives of the Big Seven voted 5 to 2 to refuse the Missouri valley confer ence member, which has sought Big Seven admission for several years. OREGON Tornadoes Claim 3 More Lives Illy United Prnw) Three persons were killed last night and today in the latest of a series of about 30 tornadoes which have swept across central or western states this week. Harold King, 17, was killed when a tornado struck his ear in which he and two other boys were riding near Nlpp, Kan., early to duy. Two persons, a man and a woman, were killed In Oklahoma last night. Five young men were Injured when a tornado overturned their car between Enterprise and .Sa lina, Kans. Missouri Pacific rail road tracks were damaged and power lines downed near Gypsum, Kans. Weathermen, however, believed that conditions which have caused the tornadoes were nearing an end. . ' Redmond Redmond, May 21 (Special Cpl. Courtland Hollis is home on. leave to visit nis parents, Mr. apd Mrs. Vern Shank, and friends. He plans to be in Redmond 17 days after which he will report at McCord Field, Wash., for re assignment. Y., by George Szendrel, 28, of Humberstone, Ont., after an argument In which Snetsky claimed Szendrel was trying to molest his girl friend, Lydla Lulsl (left). Snetsky and a friend, Richard Jo seph, were gathering wood for a wiener roast when the argument took place. (NEA Telenhoto) NO URANIUM Portland, May 21 tP The Ore gon department of geology today said it could find no uranium in an ore sample from southeastern Oregon s S teens mountains, though a Los Angeles laboratory had earlier called it "4.27 per cent non-emanatjng uranium oxide." Fay W, Libbey, director of the state geology department, said the same was analyzed by fluoride bead and spectographic means without finding uranium. The U. S. weather bureau said the river at Vancouver, Wash. which crested earlier this week at 22.5 feet would decline to 22 feet today and fall to 21.3, feet by Monday. Only station along the river yesterday to report a rise was Trinidad, Wash., near the Grand Coulee dam. There the waters rose .6 feet. As the Columbia and its main tributaries Inched back Into their banks, these drops were recorded: Lewiston, Ida., .8 foot; Uma tilla, Ore., .4; Vancouver, .1; Portland, .2. ' The backed-up Willamette river stood at 22 feet yesterday, forc ing clearance of low docks in the city's harbor.
