BEND, OREGON, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1946 Huge Oil Supply Is Hidden Away ' On Pacific Island Honolulu ill1 Safe from atomic bomlw, lite United Stales navy has a 230,1100,000 gallon oil supply stored in its "Red Hill Un derground." a vast I'earl Harbor "tank farm" buried under 200 feet of volcanic red ash. This capacity, with 12 smaller surface tanks, can fuel the Pa cific fleet for the next six vears. Built at a cost of SI2.000.000 and the lives of lti men, the "un derground" was a war-time top secret project which some -1.000 men labored almost three years to build, but which the navy has now permitted a few outsiders to inspect. 'ihe 20 tanks are each 2.i0 feet high, or approximately the height of a 20-story building. Cylindrical in shape, they are steel with con crete lining. They contain 4.000, 000 pounds of structural steel and 21,000,000 pounds of reinforcing steel. The project, lacking any precedent for design, was super vised by Lt. Comdr. Ben Rush, now Hawaii's territorial superin tendent of public works. Over l,6y0,000 cubic yards of earth had to be moved for the project and much of the material was removed from a depth of 500 feet. The job was done by hard rock miners from Colorado, ex pert tunnel men from Montana, Idaho and Nevada, and coal min ers from Pennsylvania and West Virginia, aided by some 500 Japanese-Americans from Hawaii.
