Public School Fund Allocated Salem, Oct. 21 Four million dollars In excess Income tax reve nues have been distributed among Oregon's 36 counties by Secre tary of state Robert S. Farrell for support of the public schools. The distribution represents the first half allocation of the $8 million annual state chool support fund 'voted by the last legislature. ( ; In 1938, losses occurred exten-i sively In the Fort Rock area, but have been selectively cut and since then most of these stands, now show on!y very light losses. Selective cutting of mature and! overmature trees removes most; of the pine susceptible to beetle1 damage. I Since 1912 a general decrease! In the amount of beetle killed trees has been noted and much of this is escribed to the Increased rainfall which has Increased tree vigor, enable the pines to with-; stand beetle attacks. Losses In the Cres-i cent area were 5.5 per cent, in the West Paulina area 6.8 per: cent, Cabin lake 13.8 per cent, and Panhandle area which Is immedi ately south of Bend 18.1 per cent. Partial cutting of ponderosa pine stands to remove trees most susceptible to beetle attack has proved to be one of the most promising control methods. A more recent development is the so-called sanitation-salvage log ging in which trees most likely to succumb to beetle attacks with in five to 10 years are removed. An outbreak of the Great Basin tent caterpillar in the Cabin lake area in 1937 is described in the report. This infestation increased in 1938 and reached epidemic proportion In 1939, with 100 per cent defoliation In some grazing allotments.
