Prices held in a narrow range after a slight casing in early dealings. ' The American Iron & Steel In stitute reported this week's steel activity at a record high on a ton nage basis. The news had only minorVffect on steel stocks, having been large ly discounted. Similarly, automobile shares .showed little response to a Detroit !report predicting that production this month and next may set new I record highs because of huge backlogs. Most leading stocks registered minor declines. Most issues were 'dull. V. S. Steel. Loft. Murray Corporation and Nash Kelvinator were exceptions. Nash featured motors in vol ume and made a slight advance in contrast with losses in the leaders ' General Motors and Chrysler. . New York Shipbuilding and In ternational Mercantile Marine were active and firm. Douglas Aircraft gained more than a point. Air line issues were narrowly mixed. New highs for the year were made by Pirelli of Italy at 72. up 2 and Bush Terminal Buildings Preferred certificates at up V Thatcher Preferred gained more than 3 and Keith-Albce-Orpheum Preferred more than 5 w hile gains if more than a point were made I by International Business Mach ines, Interchemical Preferred and Collins & Aikman.
